Seattle Police Department (SPD) officers responded to a 911 call by a UW student at about 8:20 p.m. yesterday night.

They were looking for an Asian man in his 20s, allegedly carrying a shotgun near the intersection of Northeast 47th Street and 16th Avenue Northeast, said R.J. Dixon, an SPD North Precinct Sergeant.

The police found no victims, and there were no reports of shots fired.

The man was said to be cursing loudly in the parking garage of The Wingate apartment building on the northeast corner of the intersection, Dixon said.

The suspect was brandishing the gun while threatening two people inside of a car, before the car drove away.

“I was just on my way home, and I heard this guy cussing really loudly and saw he had a shotgun,” said the UW student who phoned the police who asked to remain anonymous.

Police blocked off the surrounding streets with patrol cars, and six officers armed with assault weapons entered the apartment building to do a room-by-room search for the armed man. They could not locate him and left the scene by about 9:10 p.m.

“You can’t help but think there’s some element of irresponsibility,” said a member of the Interfraternity Council, commenting on the police’s departure before finding the armed man.

Members of the Interfraternity Council were near the scene and advised partygoers at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity to move indoors for safety.

“Cops outside [were] telling people to get off the street,” said freshman Whitney Engel, a resident of a house on Northeast 47th Street and 16th Avenue Northeast.

Engel told her boyfriend not to come over because she didn’t want him to be outside.

“I don’t feel scared; [it’s] just drama, more drama,” she said.
