It’s surprising to say that after over a decade and a half in the hip-hop scene, Bun B’s II Trill marks only his second solo album release to date, following his first solo release, Trill.
After the passing of his Underground Kingz (UGK) partner and friend, Pimp C, late last year, there was a question mark looming over the direction of his newest album and whether he would be able to perform under the grief and pain that stayed with him. After seeing the achievement of his second album, the answer is a resounding yes.
On the CHOPS-produced “Damn I’m Cold,” Bun B shares the limelight with New Orleans’ Lil Wayne. Trading lyrical bars, they both build upon their flashy tendencies (jewelry, cars, money) while still keeping their respective cool.
Records like “ My Block” and “Underground Thang” will keep listeners’ heads in a constant nod, but it is “Get Cha Issue” that proves Bun B can provide lyrical content on a more political level. In this track, Bun B rips into the police.
Bun has this to say: “You say you hear the help the people, and do us some good / Protect us and serve, and try to keep the peace in the hood / You claim you cracking down on the crime, but let’s keep it true / ‘Cause the biggest criminals in my city is you.”
For the most part, artists featured on II Trill play a supporting role to Bun B’s style. One track, though, sticks out for its lack of creativity and passion. “Pop It 4 Pimp” warrants sloppy production from its creator, Mouse, and the lyrics from southern rappers Juvenile and Webbie only cement their legitimacy as one-dimensional artists.
Paying tribute and homage to his fallen partner Pimp C, Bun B speaks to him on “Angel in the Sky.” The track is sure to bring a tear to the eyes of loyal UGK fans as Bun B raps, “Yeah it’s still hard, and I still cry / But you and God keep me strong, so I’m gonna still try / Reppin’ this UGK now won’t I / ‘Cause through your music, you live forever so trill don’t die.”
For Bun B, the album is a success, showing that he and Pimp C will always be Underground Kingz.
