Mary Ann Sarsoza is a junior entering nursing at the UW next fall. She works two jobs: one at a nursing facility in Bellevue and the other as an office assistant on campus. As she explained it, she simply doesn’t have time to indulge in style.

“I’m working to save money to study abroad in Tokyo,” she said.

Freshman Nathan Balboa has the time to find style but isn’t sure where to start.

“I wear shorts and sandals all year round,” he said. “Shorts in the snow, shorts in the summer. My summer continues all year long.”

Both Sarsoza and Balboa applied and won the Daily’s summer style contest. Each won a free outfit from Seattle clothing supplier KAVU, a gift certificate to downtown spa Banya5 and two tickets to Saturday’s Mariners game against the Padres.

To apply, Sarsoza and Balboa each wrote a 150-word essay describing why they deserved to win a makeover.

“Who wouldn’t want to go see the Mariners, win summer clothes and get a massage from a professional?” Sarsoza wrote.

Balboa and Sarzosa headed to Ballard to the KAVU store Saturday for the first part of the makeover.

KAVU is a pilot acronym for Klear Above Visibility Unlimited, implying the best day for flying.

“It’s a local, lifestyle brand,” said Jenny Griffith, who works at KAVU. “KAVU basically means your best day ever.”

Sarsoza and Balboa were instructed to pick out a top, some sort of bottoms, coat and an accessory to complete their KAVU outfits.

The pair split up, grabbing shirts, shorts and coats.

“This is the first time I’ve never looked at the price tag,” Balboa said.

After a few trials and errors, Sarzosa ended up with a casual, olive green skirt, purple top and lightweight jacket. Deciding on an accessory was more difficult.

“I like all of these,” she said as she flipped through the racks of purses.

Balboa picked out plaid shorts, a gray KAVU T-shirt and fleece jacket.

“I have nice new shorts, a nice new sturdy jacket — double stitched,” Balboa said. “This isn’t going to fail,”

Once returning to campus, Sarsoza and Balboa picked up their Banya5 passes and Mariners’ tickets. Sarzosa was taking her best friend, but Balboa chose to give the tickets to his brother because he was unable to go.

“He hasn’t been to a game all year,” Balboa said.
