In the 94-degree weather in Tempe, Ariz., a Washington relay team and a distance runner heated up the track even more to claim two Pac-10 titles.

The foursome of Jordan Boase, James Fredrickson, Joe Turner and Ryan Hamilton combined to win the men’s 4x100-meter relay, with a time of 39.52 seconds.
Track coach Greg Metcalf noted the event’s degree of difficulty.
“The Pac-10’s loaded,” he said. “There were four sub-40 second teams in the meet.”
Sophomore Katie Follett also took home a Pac-10 title in the women’s 1500-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 26.68 seconds.
“[Metcalf] didn’t want me to take the lead until about 75 meters to go,” Follett said, on gohuskies.com. “The plan was to be patient. I really felt good coming off the turn and I went for it.”
Metcalf agreed.
“She ran with great poise, was patient and finished hard,” Metcalf said. “She was eighth place a year ago, and to come win, that was awesome.”
Both Follett’s victory and the 4x100 meter relay victory were the first conference wins in school history in those events. The performances also qualified the athletes for the NCAA West Regionals in Northridge, Calif., this Friday.
Senior Amanda Miller also fared well in the 1500, coming in fifth with a time of 4:27.28 and qualifying herself for Regionals.
Metcalf also cited senior Norris Frederick’s performances as highlights of the meet.
“Norris Frederick did not win, but he was second in a great high jump competition [and] second in a great long jump competition, so catching second place is good,” he said.
Frederick’s jump of 7 feet, 2.25 inches in the high jump and his 25 feet, 4 inch jump in the long jump both surpassed the regional mark.
Besides the people mentioned above, the Huskies had many other top 10 finishers this past weekend that earned their way to Northridge.
Senior Austin Abbott had a strong showing in the 800 meters, finishing fourth with a time of 1:48.14.
“I think Austin can go make the NCAA finals after what he accomplished this weekend,” Metcalf said.
Senior Carl Moe ran a personal best 8:47.93 in the 3000-meter steeplechase.
“Carl, I think right now, is fourth in the Pac-10, but I think there’s definitely more in there,” Metcalf said. “I think he can get to the NCAA Championships and run well there.”
Junior Falesha Ankton had a slipup earlier in the meet, but bounced back to perform well in the 400-meter hurdles.
“Falesha had a great weekend,” Metcalf said. “She fell in the 100-meter, but to come back and score in the 400-meter was awesome.”
Ankton finished fifth, with a time of 59.52 seconds.
Besides their win in the 4x100 relay, the men had top performances in their other events as well.
Boase, who set a meet record his last time in Tempe, placed second to the defending Pac-10 champ, USC’s Lionel Larry. His time of 44.97 seconds fell short of breaking his own personal record.
Fredrickson finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdle finals. His preliminary time of 51.31 seconds, the fourth fastest overall, was faster than his final time.
Turner, a transfer from Modesto Junior College, surprised many by winning the 200-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 21.06 seconds. He finished fourth in the finals of the event.
Rounding out the highlighting performances this weekend was Washington’s top thrower Zack Midles. The sophomore threw the hammer 207 feet, 11 inches, to finish third in the hammer throw.
