Five to seven college-aged males assaulted a man last night near the main entrance to campus, at 16th Ave. NE and NE 45th St. at about 8:15 p.m. The victim was not seriously hurt, although he was taken to a regional hospital as a precaution.
“We have no idea why this assault took place,” said Lt. Peter Celms of the University of Washington Police Department (UWPD).
UWPD officers were dispatched at 8:17 p.m. and arrived within three minutes to discover that the assailants had already fled.
The suspects fled northbound on 16th Ave NE and were not apprehended at the time of printing.
“It looked like a group of guys in jackets. … They were kicking the crap out of this guy,” said Dan Halpin, a UW student and witness to the assault.
Halpin claimed the man was kicked and punched as the fight moved from the sidewalk onto NE 45th St. The assailants then walked away from the scene when people began to approach according to Halpin.
The victim appeared to be homeless to UW student witnesses.
“He was not able to give an address,” Celms said.
The assaulted man was conscious and able to talk to UWPD officers when they arrived at the scene.
“He had no comment,” Celms said.
The assailants and the victim were strangers, and the victim did not say how the assault happened, Celms added.
Witnesses were unable to give a detailed description of the attackers beyond identifying them all as college-aged males.
