Husky tennis to face Arizona at home and away

As the No. 23 Washington men’s tennis team swings into the desert this weekend to take on the Arizona schools, the No. 49 Washington women’s tennis team will battle it out against the same schools at home.

Freshman Venise Chan watches the ball approach against Oregon last month. After a tense 7-5 first set, Chan found her rhythm and finished the second set 6-1 to take the clinching point in the 6-1 win for the UW.

Today at noon the women’s team will face the Arizona Wildcats in either the Nordstrom Tennis Center or Quillian Stadium, depending on the weather. The Huskies are 10-8, but are still in search of their first Pac-10 win this weekend. They have five losses in the conference already.

The Wildcats are also seeking their first Pac-10 win. They have an even lower overall record of 7-12.

The Husky men play against No: 65 Arizona today in Tucson, Ariz.

The next opponent of the weekend for both the men and women is the Arizona State Sun Devils. They should be much more of a challenge. The men are ranked 22nd in the nation and the women are even higher, at No. 12.

Saturday’s women’s match at noon will be the last regular doubles match for seniors Allison Rainey and Tara Simpson.

Although Rainey has been a contributor from the sidelines since February, when she was sick with mononucleosis, Simpson has been a solid contributor in both singles and doubles this season, even earning the first ranking of her career at No. 98.

The Sun Devils will not make it easy for the Husky seniors to go out on top though, as they have been on a roll this season. Arizona State upset No. 5 Stanford, a team that swept Washington 7-0 earlier this season.

The Washington men will not have it any easier with ASU on Sunday. The Sun Devils boast the 2007 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Matt Brooklyn, as well as a member of last year’s first team All-Pac-10, senior Juan Carlos Rebaza.

However, Washington was successful in beating this team 6-1 last year, with wins from three returners still on the roster: senior Andy Kuharzsky, junior Patrik Fischer and sophomore Derek Drabble.

“My goal is to prove that we are as good as we are and win against the Arizona schools,” Kuharszky said.

In addition to its seasoned veterans, Washington will bring along freshman talent in the starting lineup: Martin Kildahl, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Tobi Obenaus, all of whom have been making an impact in both singles and doubles.

“In the Pac-10 there aren’t any easy matches,” said Washington coach Matt Anger. “So we’re going to go at it just like we have been every other match, preparing to play our best tennis and doing the best we can.”
