Baseball looks to regroup in BC exhibition

Following a stinging defeat at the hands of UCLA Sunday, the UW baseball team regroup and back into things with an exhibition against British Columbia tonight at Husky Ballpark.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jorden Merry launches the ball toward the plate against UCLA last Friday to tie his career high of nine strikeouts. The UW baseball team will play against British Columbia today at 6:30 p.m.

The Huskies’ (25-16, 5-7 Pac-10) game against the Thunderbirds will not count in the team standings and will not affect their overall record.

UW coach Ken Knutson said it will be all about spreading out playing opportunities and rest before ultimately making a pivotal trip to USC this weekend.

“We’ll get some guys some work on the mound and play like an exhibition,” he said.

Junior right-handed pitcher Jason Erickson, who started four games earlier this season before an injury, will make a return start. A mixed lineup is also expected.

The Dawgs will need this game to regroup, considering the way the team lost the series against the Bruins over the weekend.

Junior left-handed pitcher Nick Haughian threw a complete four-run ballgame but the Husky offense, holding a 3-0 lead late in the game, couldn’t get back on top against UCLA.

“It doesn’t really matter who’s playing; it just seems like we haven’t got much done,” Knutson said of the Huskies offensively in the past few days.

Ideally, the Huskies will use this game as a chance to play and not worry about conference rankings and competition and simply get back on track before heading into USC.

Tonight’s game will start at 6:30 p.m. and is free for all fans.
