Men’s crew dominates Beavers, women win all but one

In a repeat of last week, the Washington men’s and women’s crew teams won every race on Saturday’s regatta against Oregon State except the women’s varsity. The women’s varsity team lost by a hair to Oregon State after racing evenly for most of the way.

Stroke for Washington's "B" lineup junior Audrey Baker, along with the rest of her boat, won against Oregon State in the women's varsity four race in a duel regatta Saturday. The Huskies won eight of nine races against the Beavers.

Oregon State, which is likely to be nationally ranked after Saturday’s win, finished in 6:38.3, a mere 1.6 seconds ahead of the UW boat (6:39.9).

Women’s coach Bob Ernst thinks that the team is capable of better.

“I didn’t think that we rowed up to our potential today,” Ernst said. “We’ve been training really hard, but they didn’t row with a lot of confidence.”

Despite the victory, Ernst was also disappointed with the women’s JV crew, who are undefeated this season after barely edging out Oregon State this Saturday. The JV crew beat Oregon State by a mere 1.9 seconds after finishing in 6:50.8.

“I’m disappointed because the kids are disappointed,” he said. “They want to be really good. I think they have the potential of being pretty darn good, but right now it’s certainly a low point.”

After not competing last weekend against Washington State, the UW men’s crew team took to home waters against Oregon State. The Huskies flew down the Montlake Cut finishing the race in 5:46.1, easily beating Oregon State who finished in 5:57.97.

“I think that the preparation for the last two weeks has been exceptional,” men’s coach Mike Callahan said.

This marks the 13th consecutive official collegiate race the Washington men’s crew team has won.

The winning tone for the day, however, was set by the Husky men’s JV boat, who opened the regatta with an 11.29 second victory against Oregon State.

Both the men’s freshmen and women’s novice boats raced well Saturday. The freshmen crew (5:58.9) soundly beat Oregon State’s freshmen boat (6:18.3). The women’s novice boat did the same, finishing the race in 7:08.8, 8.4 seconds ahead of Oregon State (7:17.4).

Both men and women’s four-person boats had good races as well. The women led Oregon State for the entire race, soundly beating them by 19.5 seconds. The men had an equally impressive day finishing in 6:47.0. They were followed by three Washington boats and finally the Oregon State varsity boat (7:05.1).

The Huskies will have a challenge going up against No. 4 Cal men’s varsity and No. 1 Cal women’s varsity next Saturday.
