Senior Andy Kuharszky of the No. 32 Washington men’s tennis team put on quite a show for the crowd at the Nordstrom Tennis Center for his last regular season dual match at home last Saturday against the University of Oregon.
Kuharszky wasn’t able to take a lead early in the match and was the only Husky to lose the first set. But when push came to shove, the lone senior was able to make some ground and take the second set, gaining momentum going into the third. He finished his match, making the crowd erupt with applause and cheering for his 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 come-from-behind victory.
“It was an amazing finish to win from behind,” Kuharszky said. “I got a little scared because I didn’t want to finish here after what I would say a great career by losing my last match. He was playing so well and I was at my best so it was really tough. When I won my second set though, that was when I got relaxed. It was the turnaround point.”
The match was determined fairly quickly, and the Huskies claimed the first point of the afternoon in doubles and all three singles matches on one side of the Tennis Center. No. 2 freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, No. 4 sophomore Derek Drabble and No. 6 freshman Martin Kildahl all won their mathes.
As a result of this last match, Kildahl is the only Husky to remain undefeated in singles dual matches with a 6-0 record.
“I’ve gotten a lot more solid on all my forehands, backhands and serve,” Kildahl said of his progression. “I feel like [before] I could take good shots but I hadn’t been able to get a lot of good shots in a row. Coach has helped me a lot, helped me to win my game,” he said.
The number one, three and five singles matches also resulted in victories for the Huskies, blowing the Ducks out of the water, as they finished out the regular dual season with a 7-0 sweep against Oregon.
“I think they’ve been playing a lot better the second half of the season,” coach Matt Anger said. “I think they would have been a rough team if they had been playing that way all year, but for us to get each of the points down the line with them playing better like they have in the second half, I think that does show something.”
