The Washington men’s golf team closed out the regular season with an 11th place finish at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. The Huskies finished with a total score of 890, good for 50-over-par. The event, hosted by Stanford, featured some of the top competition that the West Coast has to offer.
No. 3 USC won the tournament, shooting a total score of 828, which was good for 12-under-par at a 13-stroke victory over Pac-10 rival and host Stanford. The University of California and UCLA tied for third, both finishing at 17-over-par, as the Cal Bears made up three strokes on the final day to catch the Bruins.
The Trojans were led by junior Rory Hie, who won the individual tournament title by shooting an even 200, putting him in the clubhouse at 10-under-par. He beat UCLA’s Kevin Chappell by eight strokes.
Senior Zach Bixler, playing in his final regular season event for the Huskies, shot a 217 for the three rounds. He finished at a tie for 25th at 7-over-par with Eric Flores of UCLA.
Washington coach Matt Thurmond was not pleased with the way the Huskies played, citing too many critical mistakes.
“We just couldn’t get it done today,” Thurmond said. “The guys played hard, but once again we just made too many double bogeys and made too few putts.”
The blustery conditions on the first day of the tournament led to some high scores as the golfers struggled to adjust to the elements.
“We had [wind] gusts up to 50 miles an hour, and what was really tough was that it was swirling at times,” University of California coach Steve Desimone told calbears.com. “That is tough because you can’t get a consistent read on what the ball will do in the air.”
The second day of the tournament however, led to more calm and favorable conditions and saw 19 players shoot even-par or better.
The Trojans were clearly the best on the green this weekend, as they placed three golfers in the top five and four in the top 10.
Husky sophomore Darren Wallace finished tied for 43rd place, finishing with a 224, which was good for 14-over-par.
Sophomore Nick Taylor and junior John Wise, the two leading golfers for the Huskies during the past month, both struggled this weekend. Taylor finished tied for 48th and 15-over-par while Wise finished in a disappointing tie for 70th at 21-over-par, less than a month after finishing ninth at the Oregon Duck Invitational.
Rounding out the scoring for the Huskies was freshman Tze Huang Choo, who shot a 19-over-par, which tied him for 62nd place overall.
The Huskies will now turn their attention to the Pac-10 championships, which will be held in two weeks from April 28-30 at the Meadow Club Golf Course in Fairfax, Calif.
“We have a lot of work to do to be ready for next week’s Pac-10 hampionships,” Thurmond said.
