Men’s golf heads to Stanford

The Huskies men’s golf team will travel to Stanford, Calif., this weekend to compete in the U.S. Intercollegiate, hosted by Stanford. The 54-hole event will be held at Stanford Golf Course, a 6,835-yard, par-70 course. This is the last regular-season tournament for the Dawgs; they will next compete in the Pac-10 championships in two weeks.

The Huskies will play 36 holes Saturday beginning at 7 a.m. and will finish out play on Sunday by playing a standard 18.

Eight Pac-10 teams will compete in the event, which will be headlined by four teams ranked in the top 20 nationally. The two Los Angeles schools, UCLA and USC, are ranked third and fifth, respectively. The hosting Cardinal checks in at No. 11, and Arizona State comes in ranked 20th.

Despite the strong field, Husky coach Matt Thurmond is excited to compete in the Bay Area this weekend.

“We really love to travel down to Stanford to compete,” he said. “There is a great collegiate feel at that facility, and we have a tremendous amount of history there.”

The Dawgs will turn to sophomore Nick Taylor to lead them this weekend, as he has recorded the low score for the Huskies three of their past four tournaments.

Junior John Wise will also need to have a good tournament for the Huskies. He finished ninth three weeks ago at the Oregon Duck Invitational, where he shot a 1-under 71 on the final day to finish at 4-over. However, Wise struggled last week at the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate, finishing at 16-over and tying for 40th place overall.

Thurmond said he thinks that being calm and focused while on the green could make the difference for the Huskies.

“We hope to play relaxed and confidently and expect to have a great showing this week,” he said. “We really need to make more putts, and I think we are ready to do that.”

The Huskies may have some 45-year-old history on their side in regards to the Stanford tournament this weekend.

“Our team won the 1963 Pac-10 championship at Stanford,” Thurmond said. “I think they left some good mojo for us out there.”
