One man was injured this morning when about five gallons of chlorine were accidentally spilled in the Ocean Sciences Building on Boat Street. Emergency personnel responded to the incident by sending a full hazardous materials team to the building. The incident occurred at about 10:50 a.m. A 52-year-old man was treated at the scene for shortness of breath and an irritation of the throat.
“It took up to five hours to get it cleaned up,” said Sgt. Sean O’Laughlin of the UW Police Department.
Nearby Columbia Road was closed during the cleaning process due to the heavy fire department traffic involved with sending a full response team to the site.
The building was evacuated after a fire alarm was pulled.
The injured man was later removed from the scene to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.
In this instance there was no UW Alert, unlike last week’s ammonia spill in More Hall, because this spill was located on the periphery of the campus.
“We might’ve done this one if it was on central campus,” UW spokesperson Norm Arkans said.
