Freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan prepares to hit a ball last month. Nedunchezhiyan took the only singles win for UW against 28th-ranked Stanford over the weekend.

The 25th-ranked Washington men’s tennis team fell to both 28th-ranked Stanford and 36th-ranked California over the weekend during their road trip to the Bay Area.

Friday against the Cardinal, Washington started strong and won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles’ point, getting on the scoreboard first.

Singles play for Washington wasn’t as convincing, though.

Five of the six singles matches resulted in straight-set losses for the Huskies, including Washington’s top performer Patrik Fischer getting taken down 6-4, 6-1 by the No. 2 player in the country, Cardinal freshman Alex Clayton.

At the second singles slot, Washington was able to claim a straight-set victory of its own thanks to freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who defeated No. 67 Matt Bruch of Stanford 6-3, 6-1.

“It was a good match,” Nedunchezhiyan said. “I heard he was a good player so I knew I had to play my best, and that’s what I did. It’s just sad that we weren’t able to win the tie.”

Although it was a great victory for Nedunchezhiyan, who has now taken down four ranked opponents this year, it was Washington’s only singles win of the day. They fell to Stanford 5-2.

Saturday against Cal, the Huskies once again just barely fell short on the road.

Washington couldn’t pick up the doubles point this time, even with an 8-4 victory from the No. 1 Husky duo of Fischer and Nedunchezhiyan.

Singles play definitely picked up for the Huskies this time around, with individuals notching impressive wins to keep things competitive.

Senior Andy Kuharszky had a quick 6-4, 6-2 win at the number three singles position and Fischer beat the Golden Bears’ top performer in a straight-setter, 7-5, 6-1, as well.

Though they were building some momentum, Cal was able to catch up. The team was leading in the overall match score until Husky freshman Martin Kildahl came through with a three-set victory (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) to tie things up at 3-3.

The match came down to Nedunchezhiyan who won his first set in a tiebreak (4), but dropped the second 6-2. In the end it was Cal who prevailed in the third, 6-3, as they edged the Huskies 4-3.
