Dalai Lama to speak at the UW

Nobel Peace Prize winner and spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will answer students’ questions and receive an honorary doctorate from the University today as part of a series of events sponsored by the nonprofit organization Seeds of Compassion.

(from left) The Dalai Lama, his interpreter Thupen Jinpa, Ann Curry and Dave Matthews discuss compassion at Key Arena Friday, the first day of the five-day Seeds of Compassion event.

Where to go:

Where: Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion

Time: 3 – 5 p.m.

Doors open at 1:30 p.m. Audience must be seated by 2:45 p.m. Tickets for the Dalai Lama Convocation are no longer available. The event will be broadcast live on UWTV’s Web site and televised live on Comcast channel 27.

Tickets for the event, which is in Hec Edmundson Pavilion, are sold out.

The Chinese Students and Scholars Association (CSSA) met with President Mark Emmert and Vice Provost Ed Taylor to discuss their concerns about the politicization of his visit, which follows violence in the Dalai Lama’s birthplace of Tibet.

“It has become increasingly clear that the incidents in Lhasa were organized activities instigated by Tibetan separatists, with the intention of splitting China and undermining the Beijing Olympics,” the group wrote in an open letter to Emmert.

Assurances have been made by the UW administration that the Dalai Lama’s visit to campus will be apolitical.

“This isn’t a news conference and it’s not a seminar,” Emmert said in The Seattle Times.

UW officials chose 14 students to ask the Dalai Lama questions on Monday. None of those questions, which were submitted last month, are political in nature.

Despite these assurances, a group of concerned students are planning to march to Hec Ed in protest today.

The CSSA is not involved in this protest and CSSA never engages in any political activities, said Dawei Liu, the association’s president.

The Chinese Student Association has also decided not to join the protest.

“We don’t want to be either anti- or pro- ‘Free Tibet.’ … It’s such a sensitive matter, being Chinese-American,” said Wing Wong, the CSA ASUW senator.

When the Dalai Lama arrived in Seattle Thursday, he reiterated his support for non-violent demonstrations for Tibet. He supports further autonomy for Tibet and open dialogue with the Chinese government, according to the Times.

Despite efforts to depoliticize the Dalai Lama’s visit to Seattle, the growing conflict in Tibet and clashes over the Olympic torch have cast a shadow over the proceedings.

A plane flew a banner above Qwest Field Saturday reading, “Dalai Lama pls stop supporting riots.” A celebration of compassion, attended by more than 50,000 people and including music, dancing and a speech by the Dalai Lama, was underway below.

Tibet has been under China’s control since 1959. Violence resulting from demonstrations against the Chinese government began in mid-March. The number of casualties are unknown, ranging from the Chinese government’s count of about 13 to many more, according to the BBC. China asserts that the Dalai Lama has encouraged the violence in Tibet. He denies this, according to the Times.

China’s position in the spotlight, as it prepares for the 2008 Olympics, has catalyzed further demonstrations for Tibetan independence around the world, including protests that have disrupted the carrying of the Olympic torch.

Jimmy Lal, student at the UW, said it is difficult to frame anything as apolitical. He will be attending the event simply to learn more about compassion.

“The Seeds of Compassion gathering is meant for everyone to cultivate compassion in their lives,” he said.

It sure is convenient for China to call for depoliticization of the Olympics when they end up on the short end of the stick. Let's not forget that China has consistently used the Olympics for their own political interests. Since the 1956 Olympics, China has boycotted the Olympics if Taiwan was allowed to enter the games under anything other than "Chinese Taipei." To this day, Taiwan is required to enter under that China-imposed name, and also disallowed the privilege of waving their own national flag in the games. So before advocates for the Beijing Olympics get upset over the politicization of the Olympics, perhaps they should also protest China's bullying tactics on the IOC and hosting countries in regards to the entry of Taiwan in the games.

This is so rediculous, Tibet and Taiwan have both been part of China since forever. How would it sound if Florida wanted to be indepenent and wanted to hold the olympics as a separate nation away from the US and wave their "national" flag? Sounds like BS.

It's a little more complicated than saying Tibet has been part of China "since forever" and justifying that 700 year figure requires turning your head just so and squinting while looking at the facts.

In response to Amanda:

I will reiterate my point which you seemed to miss. My point was that it is hypocritical for China to be calling for depoliticization of the Olympics when they have repeatedly used the Olympics for political manners in the past. Since Taiwan is a touchy issue, take the 1980 Olympics for example. In 1980, China joined in the boycott of the Olympics in the Soviet Union to protest against their invasion of Afghanistan.

There is no point in arguing with ignorant Chinese who were born under the Communist regime. Amanda (Ping) and Jessica (Pong), may not have had the luxury of living in a free world and so their view of the rest of the world will be slanted.

What are Ping and Pong talking about...700 years? From what history are they basing this claim? Tibetans have their own language which is read left to right with only 30 characters. The religion, Buddhism which comes from India. BTW, 99% of the Tibetan population have 20/20 vision.

If Tibet was part of China, why are there so few Tibetans who speak Chinese? Since the 1959 invasion, China has killed over 1.2 million Tibetans. China has consistently distorted the truth about Tibet and its time for you Chinese to start educating yourselves about Tibet and join the rest of the world in protesting the 2008 Olympics!

Dalai lama was son of a poor peasant family who is now a leading non-violence leader respected by the world community! this is a fact that a man has come a long way and his message is needed for all of us - Chinese, Americans, Tibetans, Indians, Arabs, across the world - to be a persona with "warm hearted", a compassionate person who can show love and respect to others! This is his core message and I'm saddened to hear how our Chinese brothers and sisters minds are twisted by Communist Regime's order. There's nothing to be sacred of this man who doesn't want independence but to live under Chinese nation but with self determination, be able to practice and preserve Tibetan religion, language, culture and give control to CHina in foreign matters. This is not too mucht to ask?? Young students of China, please be more open minded?? To answer your question!

"Do you know your hero, Dalai Lama, works for CIA?"
This is the most absurd thing you can say about the Dalai Lama. I've met with Ken Knaus the writer of CIA: Shadow Circus, you must read his book completely before making accusations at Dalai Lama.. besides what does this have to do with Tibet right now??

"Do you recall how he became 14th Dalai Lama, not your grandfather (became 14th Dalai Lama)?"

I don't know what you exactly mean here, but if you are saying that my grandfather is not 14th dalai lama - your right! Dalai Lama is infact my father, mother and every thing to us Tibetans, that's why Tibetans in Tibet eventhough they haven't see Dalai Lama for over 50 yrs, people still revere him in the heart of every Tibetan! China can take away everything - flesh and bone- but they cannot take away the love and respect for the Dalai Lama. That is why China is scared, they can't brainwash Tibetans devotion to their one and only leader, the Dalai Lama.

"Dalai is at most a tool of Uncle Sam to anti-China. That way why CIA give him the money."

It is totally untrue, and has again nothing to do with Tibet at the moment. This is rethoric direct from the Chinese gov't's propaganda.

"You are lying that "Tibetan were treated as second-class citizen", Tibetan have many preference in China, even Dalai Lama admitted this in his biograph and books."

Yes you are right in way Tibetans do have minority special cases, where they can attend school and college in mainland without fee. But this is only handful cases, and there's strict rules in them, Tibetans can't choose the major they want, like math, science etc. So they end up studying Tibetan major. Many Tibetans don't even graduate because they have poor education at early age. And even if you graduate, Tibetans face enormous racial discrimination at getting decent jobs so they return back to Tibet. Tibetans who have gov't jobs or acts as Beijing's puppet will have upper hand in getting their kids these special status. Some students are actually Chinese and claim that their great grandfather or mother is a Tibet so then they are given these rights. So in education, Tibetans have to learn Chinese if they want to excel and most end up loosing their own Tibetan language culture which what the Chinese gov't wants. There's no incentive to learn Tibetan at all! - continue next

"I think you are midleading people here."
Misleading??? I'm sorry but I say it from my own personal experience of being a Tibetan refugee, being in Tibet speaking to my family members that i've never seen before and found them to have horific tales about the Communist "peaceful" liberation of Tibet! Every Tibetan I met has a family members or loved ones who have been killed directly as a result from the brutal occupation of Tibet. They are so many untold stories that China has hidden behind the iron curtain! Soo the truth will come out!

I'm a Tibetan and proud to be a Tibetan American. How can I not be proud, as we have a leader that is respected across the globe from every race and culture. Dalai Lama is gift to this world, he represents what a small yet valuable Tibetan culture can contribute to the greater humanity, to the world family.

"Remember that, it was people's liberation army librated your grandparents from the slavery system of Dalai, so that you have the chance to go to school and even study overseas. Otherwise, maybe you are still a slave."

Sorry I wasn't born in Tibet, born in India to family who barely escaped from Tibet when your "peaceful" liberation killed thousands of people exactly 49 yrs ago in Lhasa. Under the Dalai Lama's Democratic system and the Gov't of India's help, we have received far better education than what our brothers and sisters in Tibet - most are still not getting any education at all inside Tibet. Go to rural areas, there's no school even if they do there's no teachers who are qualified to teach. Just young barely high school graduates, taught mostly in Chinese too.

I hope you'll get a better perspective now. Please don't just say what your gov't tells you, you must look deeper, just like what your leader Deng Xiaoping said in famous quote, "Seek Truth from Facts"! This is what must be done in Tibet by every Chinese citizens and gov't. Truth is all we have Tibetans, we don't have 1/3 of the worlds population, we don't have trillion dollars army force, we don't have even 1 millino army force? What we have is the TRUTH! In case you don't know, Dalai Lama's annual payment from the CIA was $186,000 in year 60's. Now it is so much more.

"Throughout the 1960s, the Tibetan exile community was secretly pocketing $1.7 million a year from the CIA, according to documents released by the State Department in 1998. Once this fact was publicized, the Dalai Lama’s organization itself issued a statement admitting that it had received millions of dollars from the CIA during the 1960s to send armed squads of exiles into Tibet to undermine the Maoist revolution. The Dalai Lama's annual payment from the CIA was $186,000. Indian intelligence also financed both him and other Tibetan exiles. He has refused to say whether he or his brothers worked for the CIA. The Dalai Lama's administration acknowledged today that it received $1.7 million a year in the 1960's from the Central Intelligence Agency, but denied reports that the Tibetan leader benefited personally from an annual subsidy of $180,000.

The money allocated for the resistance movement was spent on training volunteers and paying for guerrilla operations against the Chinese, the Tibetan government-in-exile said in a statement. It added that the subsidy earmarked for the Dalai Lama was spent on setting up offices in Geneva and New York and on international lobbying.

The Dalai Lama, 63, a revered spiritual leader both in his Himalayan homeland and in Western nations, fled Tibet in 1959 after a failed uprising against a Chinese military occupation, which began in 1950.

The decade-long covert program to support the Tibetan independence movement was part of the C.I.A.'s worldwide effort to undermine Communist governments, particularly in the Soviet Union and China.

Do not expect that one can just point fingers at other people where they have blood on their own hands. China indeed has some problems still, but countries evolve and make progress not in just one day, you can give productive suggestions, rather than derogatory insults. Didn't you guys practice: Do not do upon others what you don't want to be done to you? You would negotiate with your neighbour about disbute instead of aiming a weapon at him right? Same goes between countries, the US and the west has no right in pointing fingers at China, real changes come from within, for those who presume that Chinese can not protest and will be put in jail nowadays, they should see the news today of teachers protesting the goverment in Sichuan province about living standards. China IS making progress, and hijacking the olympics like the dalailama and co are doing can only jeopardise their cause.

Jack or Ping or whatever your name is...

I think you need to re-evaluate your data. If Tibet's population was one million then there would be no Tibetans left since 1959; since China killed over 1.2 million Tibetans. Perhaps your claim seems legitimate only because the PRC has a tendency to distort the facts as well as rewriting history...even their own history. China has redrawn Tibet's map to 1/2 its size...look at any map drawn prior to 1959. Just because you change the history of Tibet to suit your needs; it doesn't mean its true.
By the way, why don't you Chinese go play with yourself in a corner somewhere rather than play with history....it will be more pleasurable...masturbate like HELL...if you're allowed to do so! Just don't reproduce because the Global Pest Control is now in force.

CIA was real dirty by doing this.

So, Dalai did work for CIA, since he received salary from CIA, 186000/year salary, oh man, that was more than the salary of a full professor at UW.

So, UW should have Dalai as full professor, not just gave him an degree. I feel sorry for Dalai, he should be given a professorship.

However, no matter what changes, I believe Tibet will never come back to slave system and Theocracy as Dalai claimed. The only way, he can return is to give up his Theocracy claim, give up his political role, play his religious role only, enjoy be a spirit lama, not an evil politician.

We should not take personal attacks at His Holiness because his image is hard to change after so many years propaganda. He looks indeed a very nice guy - no doubt about it.

However,if he is a good guy as what he wants us to believe, he should denounce the cradle terrorist group - Tibetan Youth Congress. If he does, probably no exiled Tibetans would respect him because they thought HH were actively looking for independence even he didn't say so. If he doesn't, he will be obviously losing respects from the west and the whole thing will collapse.

The problem is, he probably isn't that powerful at all inside the Tibetan community. He is probably struggling in between himself, the budda, China, west, TYC...That's why he keeps changing his words...

The bottom line is, we want peace, and we want a united China.

The Tibetans in west have been brainwashed - as much as we were in the cultural revolution. At that time we thought all the Americans were monsters! But they are indeed, humans as we are.
