Tough matches await determined Huskies

For the second week in a row, the No. 28 Washington men’s tennis team (8-4) is heading into a weekend of matches with the honorary Pac-10 Player of the Week.

Senior Andy Kuharszky has succeeded the weekly honor from fellow teammate, freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan after going 4-0 last weekend against Oregon and Denver.

Today at 3 P.M., the Huskies will be taking on their first of two opponents this weekend, 43rd-ranked Pepperdine (3-5) at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

The Waves’ ranking is not very indicative of how they’ve been performing this season, though, as they have recently dominated in the Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament where their number one and two teams competed in the final for the title.

Although Washington will have the home court advantage, Pepperdine has proved to be extremely dangerous on the road, recently sweeping UC Irvine 7-0 and upsetting then No. 14 Florida 4-3.

“They definitely are playing at a Top-25 team level,” Washington coach Matt Anger commented.

Then, on Sunday at noon, the Huskies will face the University of the Pacific Tigers (4-3).

“We’ve had some success against them in the past, but they’re not a team we’re going to overlook,” Anger added.

After breaking into the Top-40 rankings for the first time this week, the 34th-ranked Washington women’s tennis team will be facing a duo of elite tennis teams on the road in the Bay Area this weekend.

At 1:30 today, the Huskies are scheduled for a matchup against No. 7 USC, and won’t have much time to recover before their next match, which takes place Saturday at noon when Washington will have the challenge of taking on No.9 UCLA.

USC and UCLA are two very tough teams,” Washington coach Jill Hultquist said. “We’ve been working hard, though, and we’re confident going into this weekend’s matches. It’ll be a tough fight.”

Not only have the Huskies earned a season-high ranking, but two individual players, freshman Venise Chan and senior Tara Simpson, have broken into the ITA singles rankings themselves for the first time in their careers, at 41 and 98 respectively.

Both players (11-1) will be leading the team this weekend in their toughest road trip of the season.
