Tonight, undergraduate dancers will perform a variety of self-choreographed pieces at the latest Dance Majors Concert, incorporating a wide range of styles and genres.
Auditions for the concert were held in October, and the student performers have already had two showings for faculty members, and this performance is the culmination of all that work. Some dances are solos, while others have as many as 13 dancers in the piece.
“For me personally, my piece incorporates gesture work, that stylistic form of expressions,” performer Oddessa Whitman said. “The sound score I basically did myself using sound software.”
Those involved in creating these pieces have finished a three-quarter composition series.
“While the music and movement material spans from traditional to jazz and contemporary indie, their artistic practice is definitely informed by postmodern dance practice in its broad and eclectic range,” said Jung Koch, the artistic director for the performance.
“The whole concert spans so many genres,” Whitman said. “It’s mostly contemporary dance, but there are some theatrical elements to some pieces. One student is also a drama major and her piece includes stage art.”
Performances run tomorrow through Saturday begining at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
“The diversity in each piece is great — so many things happening — and its hard to hone in on one specific genre or quality,” Whitman said.
