The 35th-ranked Washington women’s tennis team struggled on the road during spring break with tough losses to the Michigan schools. As a result, the Dawgs are now 1-5 in road matches.

On Wednesday, the Huskies took on Michigan State and came up short of a victory losing 6-1 to the Spartans.

After dropping the doubles point to MSU, sophomore Joyce Ardies earned the only victory for Washington that day, fighting back after dropping the first set 6-0 to win the next two, 6-4, 7-5.

Two of the freshmen in the Washington starting lineup, Venise Chan and Kelsey Anonsen, also battled in three-set games, but neither of them were able to best their opponent in the third set, giving Michigan State a 6-1 victory.

The next day in Ann Arbor, the match against the 29th-ranked, the Michigan Wolverines turned out to be even grimmer for Washington.

Even though the Huskies battled tough during the doubles matches and kept it close by winning five points in two of the three matches, they still lost all three in the end to give up the doubles point.

Anonsen was the only Husky to even take a set from the Wolverines in singles play, but still lost her match 4-6, 6-2, 1-0.

Michigan proved to be too fierce for Washington, as the rest of the Huskies lost in straight sets, making way for a 7-0 Wolverine sweep.

The Huskies are now 10-8 overall but still winless in the conference with an 0-5 record. They will be at home in search of their first Pac-10 victory against the Arizona schools Saturday.
