Wicca: Deeply tied to nature, giving back to the environment

Ever since man came into existence, he has been drawn to define boundaries outside himself — to know the divine. This has lead to the formation of thousands of religions in hopes of revealing more answers to the unknown.

The Wiccan faith is one of the few religions deeply tied to nature.

A less conventional and highly controversial religious pathway is Wicca. Many imagine dark images of spell casting or rituals. What most don’t know is that much of Wicca is about the relationship with Mother Nature, the divine and your own spirituality.

Primarily based on the teachings of Gerald Gardner in the 1940s, Wiccan beliefs and practices have grown to include new traditions and sects, including Alexandrian Wicca and British Traditional Wicca (BTW).

MorningStar, one Wiccan’s chosen Magickal name, began studying and practicing the faith in 1986 during her senior year in college after meeting “a wild, wacky redhead” at the Renaissance Faire in California. Since then, she has studied with many other groups, and she began teaching in 1996. She runs the Seattle Witches Meetup Web site.

“I always tell my students that I expect them to teach me at least as much as I teach them,” MorningStar wrote in an e-mail.

Depending on whom you ask, Witchcraft, in contrast to Wicca, is more of a spiritual path and is less structured and defined.

“Anyone can call themselves a Witch,” MorningStar wrote. “No one has the lock on the term, and there are Satanists and many others who also call themselves Witches. ... I think there are also Witches who use the term Wicca or Wiccan because they are less frightening and more politically correct.”

Wiccans or Witches believe in giving back to the environment and belong to one of the few religions deeply tied to nature.

Wiccans celebrate the seasonal cycles with eight Sabbats a year, including the equinoxes, solstices and halfway points inbetween. During these celebrations, many leave behind old habits and negative ways of thinking.

“We are getting ready to celebrate Eostara, the Spring Equinox, a celebration of the spring and the Teutonic Goddess named Eostre, also called Ostara,” MorningStar wrote. “If we look at nature during March, we see the bunnies multiplying and the birds laying eggs. All of nature seems to be bursting forth with fertility and new life!”

This relates to the celebration of Easter and the resurrection of Christ and how everyone seems to go through a transformation as we pass from winter into spring.

“Well, I’d say Pagans and Neo-Pagans practice a deep connection with nature. All Wiccans and Witches are Pagans, but not all Pagans are Wiccans and Witches. The historical Pagans who lived off the land were dependent on the cycles of the seasons to bring their crops to fruition and their livestock to multiply, so a deep relationship with Mother Nature was a huge part of their lives,” MorningStar wrote. “Today, we can still see the relationship between our lives and the cycle of the seasons and, being more in tune with it, can be deeply satisfying on a spiritual level.”

While there are many differences between practicing Wiccans and Witches, many use the various energies from the Earth in healing and transformation, MorningStar wrote.

Members of other Pagan and shamanistic traditions including the Druids or other groups that emulate Native Americans, Aborigines and others also connect with nature to gain insight into their lives, she wrote.

In regards to “magick,” Wiccans believe this is a normal part of daily life that everyone practices, although most do so unknowingly.

“There are energies all around us, which we can either ignore or we can tap into to affect our lives,” MorningStar wrote. “Think about the energy of the Sun. Don’t you feel differently on a cloudy day than on a sunny day? What does the Sun’s energy do to you? ... Now think about how you might harness that energy and make those changes deliberately.”

Many Wiccans believe that the divine is duotheistic and balanced. Other sects are monotheistic and see the God and Goddess as one or worship one or the other. There are many variations depending on the Witch.

“We see the Goddess and the God representing the male and female elements of Divinity as complementary polarities,” MorningStar wrote.

Many Wiccans believe that the afterlife is spiritual assessment versus punishment and salvation.

“We believe life and afterlife are what you deliberately choose to make of them. Most Wiccans/Witches believe in reincarnation, and many believe that the afterlife (called “Summerland”) is a time of spiritual assessment,” MorningStar wrote. “To think about the lives you’ve led so far and the next lessons to be learned in your journey. ... The architecture of your afterlife is yours to create as you see fit, and the responsibility for what your life and afterlife contains is strictly the individual’s.”

Some Wiccans practice the art of Tarot reading. How this is done is up to the individual.

“Tarot works differently for different people. Some people use the traditional methods of putting the cards in certain positions and reading the card’s definitions from a book,” MorningStar wrote. “Some people toss random cards on a table and just look at the artwork. Either way, the person lets the art take them on a little mental journey, and many people will then gain insights or interesting bits of info on those journeys. I use Tarot as a personal meditation.”

Like many other religions, Wicca can be used as a tool that can be especially empowering to the individual, as well as teaching valuable ideals such as respect, tolerance, humility and honesty.

“There are groups touting themselves as the ‘only one true way,’ and I so disagree with that,” MorningStar said. “As so many ancient religions state, there are many ways to the top of the mountain. I encourage folks to think for themselves, to look deep within their own hearts and look for the path that calls them, and to go forth with the conviction that they already have knowledge and wisdom that propels them forward.”

Are you serious?

This has NOTHING to do with Christ. Christ stands for the manifestation of TRUTH - the truth that all pagan practices are evil and anti-God.
Let's look at 1 Corinthians 10:

"No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God"

Christ is opposed to ANY pagan practice. Pagans in all actuality are worshiping satan himself.

Once again, the daily makes a retarded fool of itself.

First, there is no reincarnation. The afterlife is not a time of spiritual assessment but an open book look at how one lived their life all done in the presence of God. He judges but his judgement is loving.
Wiccans will be surprised that their "path up the mountain" did not lead where they thought. But, the God who loves them greets them nonetheless. But, he is fair and he will not be mocked.

How do you expect Jesus to come back, if Not from Reincarnation?(of which is in the "bible"- written by men 35-300 years after Christ).
If you Believe that God created this world and each and every one of us in His Light and His Wisdom, how can ANYONE JUDGE ANOTHER who follows her or his own Spiritual Path, according to God's Creation?
If you believe that your path is the one for you, then follow it, but do NOT dare to JUDGE another of God's creations and put them down for Following the Path that has been given to them.
Christianity was a Pacifist Religion!!!
CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS AS A MESSENGER OF PEACE!!!
HE LOVED AND HEALED PEOPLE OF ALL WALKS OF FAITH AND DID NOT PUSH THEM AWAY.
IF ONE CLAIMS TO BE A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST,
THEN YOU SHOULD BE AT THE VERY LEAST, TOLERANT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S BELIEFS...ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT INTERFERING WITH YOU!!!
WICCA IS A NATURAL AND HEALING RELIGION OF PEACE AND LIGHT...IT IS NOT WHAT YOU MAY HAVE HEARD FROM THOSE LESS EDUCATED OR SEEN ON TV.
THERE ARE ACTUAL CHRISTIAN WICCANS!!!
CHRIST HIMSELF WAS OUT IN NATURE,
AND WITH THE ELEMENTS AND EARTH THAT GOD CREATED FOR US ALL!!! HE WAS NOT IN CHURCHES AND IN SECLUDED GROUPS.
IF YOU WANT TO GET A FULL PROSPECTIVE AND FULLY EDUCATED UNDERSTANDING OF CHRIST AND HIS BLESSED PURPOSE,
THEN READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT HIM BEFORE YOU GO AND CONSIDER YOURSELF THE JUDGE OF ANOTHER PERSON'S BELIEFS....ONLY GOD JUDGES, NO MAN HAS THIS RIGHT......!!!
READ THE 'APOCHRIFA'(these are parts of the bible that have been confirmed to be omitted from the bible from a handful of men that did not want those writings in it),
also,THE LAUGHING JESUS, THE ST THOMAS VERSES. MARY MAGDALENE'S WRITINGS, AND MANY, MANY MORE!!!!
KNOWLEDGE OF THE COMPLETE BIBLE WILL HELP THOSE WHO WANT TO KNOW THE ENTIRE TRUTH, AND WILL HELP YOU TO SEE THE "WHOLE PICTURE", WITHOUT FEAR, AND WITHOUT JUDGEMENT, ALLOWING EACH BLESSED PERSON CREATED BY GOD, TO TRUELY UNDERSTAND THE LIGHT OF GOD AND WALK IN PERFECT LOVE, LIGHT AND TRUTH!!!

YOU SAID:
"How do you expect Jesus to come back, if Not from Reincarnation? "

Jesus will reincarnate himself. Reincarnate simply means to reappear in the flesh. Big deal.

YOU SAID:
"If you Believe that God created this world and each and every one of us in His Light and His Wisdom..."

Be careful here: God DID create us in his Light, and we go and slap him in the face the first time we commit a single sin, deserving of hell.

YOU SAID:
"... how can ANYONE JUDGE ANOTHER who follows her or his own Spiritual Path, according to God's Creation?"

Jesus makes it PERFECTLY clear that HE is "THE way and THE truth, and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through me." THERE IS ONE PATH , his name is Jesus. Any other path leads to hell.

YOU SAID:
"Christianity was a Pacifist Religion!!!
CHRIST DIED ON THE CROSS AS A MESSENGER OF PEACE!!!"

Christ dies peacefully as an offering for our sin, but will judge righteously. His message was not ONLY of peace, but of justice, which God will have when Jesus himself judges us all according to whether or not we accept him as our King, and only King.

YOU SAID:
"IF ONE CLAIMS TO BE A FOLLOWER OF CHRIST,
THEN YOU SHOULD BE AT THE VERY LEAST, TOLERANT OF OTHER PEOPLE'S BELIEFS...ESPECIALLY PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT INTERFERING WITH YOU!!!"

I would tell these people the Truth out of love. The truth is Jesus, and not this Wicca delusion.

YOU SAID:
"WICCA IS A NATURAL AND HEALING RELIGION OF PEACE AND LIGHT."

Really? Look at 2 Corinthians 11:14:
And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. See, the Word of God has an explanation for why it appears as a "religion of light."

YOU SAID:
"THERE ARE ACTUAL CHRISTIAN WICCANS!!!"

Yes, the definition of 'Christian' is getting very loose these days.

YOU SAID:
"CHRIST HIMSELF WAS OUT IN NATURE,"
Your point?! Did he ever denounce himself as the ONLY path to God? No. Therefore he is not Wicca.
A Wicca by definition claims there is a path to true spirituality besides Jesus. They can not be Christians.

"... ALLOWING EACH BLESSED PERSON CREATED BY GOD, TO TRUELY UNDERSTAND THE LIGHT OF GOD AND WALK IN PERFECT LOVE, LIGHT AND TRUTH!!!"

This is a LIE.

When someone asked Jesus: “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” He replied: "For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able."

What I really don't understand about Christianity, is why they let a book that was written by a bunch of men determine how the world and religion works.

Many religious fanatics believe that age give validity to their faith. Well then what about the Bhagavad Gītā? Or if you want older, the ancient Hieroglyphs on the pyramids that still exist to this day! Those went into great detail about their religion.

You can quote the bible all day long and say things that have been rewritten a million times to satisify the needs at whatever time it was rewritten, but ask yourself something. What do you believe is the truth? Not what your pastor says, not what the bible says. Take yourself out of all the dogma and put yourself into the world that was created by your God and ask him. If he knows all the answers then he should be able to answer your questions. Another thing, go spend some time in another country besides the US. Spend some times in the shoes of someone who is not a Christain and then ask yourself if you can send 9/10 of the population to hell because they don't believe the same exact things as you do.

Religion is destroying our world and there are some of us who are just trying to simply reconnect with that what is most important. Our Earth. Take the time and re-read what Morningstar has said and dont let your closed mindedness keep you from at least seeing a different path.

Stephanie..

I did ask God. And he told me that He(Jesus) is the only way, and he showed me the Truth. I know that Wicca might feel powerful, and light. But does it feel like THE Truth? You can take ecstasy, and it might feel powerful, and light, and good, but it's delusion. It's not ANOTHER path to TRUTH. It's a false path to delusion. If you actually place Jesus as your final authority, he will show you the Truth. And none of this Wicca stuff can even compare to how it feels to KNOW your a sinner, and see the TRUTH about yourself, and about who is in control, and to have a relationship with the most Loving force in the entire universe, and KNOW IT as plain and clear as your hand is in front of your face. And I'm not talking about love like you love the earth, or like your boyfriend "loves" you, but I'm talking about something you've probably never even felt before.
You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

I must point out that other people have experiences with Divinity billions of times a day all over the universe, and each experience is different, unique, special, and not always described the way you described yours. And I have no problem with you describing your experience any way you like, and I will be happy to accept your interpretation of your experience, but you can only speak for YOUR experiences - you can't speak for mine or Stephanie's or anyone else's. Millions of people describe encounters with Allah, Mohammed, Shiva, Brigid, Kali Ma, Quetzalcoatl, etc. etc. And you can arrogantly tell millions of people they are delusional and wrong? I appreciate and respect your description of your spiritual connection with Divinity, but I cannot respect your intolerance and narrowmindedness. It is deeply unspiritual. My Patron Deities counsel me that tolerance, respect, and humility as the true paths to finding the Divine. I believe yours does as well, but I leave you to interpret your religion's teachings. I only ask the same respect in return. May the light of deep wisdom shine from us all as we ponder these deeply disturbing questions! Blessed Be!

Ahh...I can see we have a long way to go before all can walk together in the sunlight. First of all, Satan is a Christian concept. I do not consider Satanists to be Pagans. Pagans do not have a supreme figure of Evil. They do not worship, need or want one, so definitely are not going to borrow one from someone else! To say otherwise is, at best, ignorance; at worst, hate speech.
I do not agree with Stephanie that "religion is destroying our world". Those people of any (or no) religion, including Christians and Pagans, who practice compassion, charity, tolerance and respect for the interconnection of all life are doing God's / Goddesses' work.
Those who aggressively proselytize a religious path of fear, conformity, and persecution, based on a deep sense of inherent "sin" and personal inadequacy will, in time, reap what they have sown.

MorningS:(Whatever your real name is):
You must agree that at most one of us is correct. That is, either you are deceived, or I am deceived, or we both are.

I do believe that millions think they are in communication with mother earth, Allah, etc... But these experiences are actually just communications with Satan. So when you do your tarot cards, and other pagan rituals you are communicating with Satan described in the Holy Bible, whether or not you believe it to be true.
But your NEVER going to understand that and believe it, unless God choses to reveal the Truth of Jesus to you.

All have sinned - me, you, Ophelia, and Dylan, etc.. And unless God lets you see Jesus, as God, crucified, bloodied, pierced, mutilated, covering our filthy, wicked, evil selves with his righteous blood as a GLORIOUS, mighty, righteous, act of Love.. then you will always be lost and you will perish for eternity. All in God's perfect judgment. God could have sent ALL to hell forever, and still have been perfectly just. But he didn't do that. This is unbelievable! Why would Him, being so righteous, do this for any of us - take our deserved punishment?!

He did not HAVE to die.. He could have stopped it, and there is no one LESS deserving than Him. He was perfect, and we are wicked... all of us. No matter how many "loving acts of kindness" you do. We do them out of pride. It is a problem of our heart. He is the ruler of the universe, and although we spit on him, and mock him, he dies anyway for US who he has chosen! When he could crush ALL of us in one blow, and damn us all forever. I will pray for you "MorningS" that God reveals Jesus to you, so that you can know the Truth and be redeemed and feel his MIGHTY, powerful love wash your sins and give you the only source of Truth-Jesus. This is more satisfying than anything else. Nothing else has the power to take away everything you've ever done wrong. All this for free - because he Loves us.

Easy - I think you need to relax and realize that witches find love from our deities as well. But we don't need them to take away our wrongdoings, we ask no sacrifices from them. Yes, I have done wrong things in my life that could be considered sins, but I take full responsibility for making up for them. I don't simply ask forgiveness and have the slate wiped clean. I must make up for these wrongs, and that is my choice, not something required of me. I understand where you're coming from, because I was raised in a very Christian environment. However it never resonated with my soul. I found my connection to the earth itself, and I would never go back, nor would I condemn someone else for staying with it. You are free to worship whatever divinity you choose, and so am I. You're ranting will not make me change my mind.

I'm talking about belief as in "you 'believe' you can see your hand in front of your face." I only know people that believe in Jesus with that kind of conviction. You don't even know what true believing is until God makes you see his Truth. And I have done nothing to provoke this awakening. This was God entirely. There was nothing I have done or could ever do in order to see the Truth.

Just curious Easy, does it bother you that God chooses to not reveal himself to so many people? The majority of people on the planet are not Christian, have never heard God tell them that Jesus is the way. The fastest growing religion right now (worldwide) is Islam-- in the U.S. it's Mormonism ( I don't get the impression that you're Mormon). Why is that? Why on one hand would God go through this big deal of blood and suffering just to let Satan run amok with these false religions fooling people and the He never bothers to pop in and give them an authentic spiritual experience to let them know what's wrong? Does it bother you that the majority of people will never have the conviction you do and surely be doomed to hell? I mean, if most people are lost, what does it matter to them that Jesus died. Satan came into their lives, God left them behind and they never had a fighting chance.

Sally,
Great questions! No, I am not mormon. Jesus is my 'religion.'

Suppose we wish to call God 'unfair.' Who would you complain to? ... God's judgment is righteous. For him to save even ONE sinner, blows my mind. I used to think I was a 'good' person. I mean, I had never killed anyone! But God tells us that even one lie or lustful thought makes us filthy. I had never believed that until God opened my eyes and I actually saw myself as filthy, and I saw Jesus' body nearly ripped apart, pouring his blood out for me so that my sins could be forgiven, and I could have real life. I saw God's righteousness on the cross.

For Him to do that for EVEN only one person, is not FAIR. FAIR would have been me burning in hell forever, because that was the path that I had chosen. We all choose it. Even if you think you haven't. I didn't think I had chose it! But God let me see that I had. I was flat out lying to myself and others about it.
In the MIDST of my sin, God had rescued me. When I deserved it the least!

But God is JUST. This means that someone has to pay the penalty for our sins if we want to be counted as justified. This is God, coming down in the flesh, as Jesus, to suffer what we should have.

Sally, you must understand that Satan comes into our lives, and tempts us, and WE, being wicked take the bait and turn our back on God. The only reason we didn't have a fighting chance is because we ourselves are by nature evil, and of course Satan's evil will entice us. It is our fault.

Ephesians 2:9 says:
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. "

You see, I cannot boast in anything except the cross! I myself, cannot look at you guys who don't see Jesus as the mighty God who rescued us out of our evil hearts, and think of you as lower by nature. We are all wicked by nature, myself included.

When you understand that sin is OUR fault, no matter where you live or what religion you were brought up in, and that we are all deserving of hell, and by God's grace, some of us don't get what we deserve... It starts to make a little more sense, don't you think? I certainly wouldn't expect you to understand entirely until you get saved, but I hope you can understand that it's all about God's righteousness, it's not about us. We cannot try to hold God accountable to OUR notion of what is fair. He is God. He is righteous. We are low.

This is good news for everyone. This means no matter what you've done in your life or who you've slept with or what you have worshiped or who you have lied to, you still have hope in Jesus! Your past is irrelevant.

I disagree with you that everyone can be saved. The majority of people are not saved currently, and most people who have lived and died were not saved either. Of course from the human perspective we all have a lifetime in which we can turn things around and become Christians. Is it correct to say this is God's perspective? How could it be? God sees your entire life and all the generations before and after you. God knows everyone's fate in an instant. This follows from him being omnipresent, all knowing, all powerful. Most of us are destine for hell and that is part of God's plan. Most people are destine to never be saved.

But you say this is more than fair because it's God's fair and any concept of fair comes from him. I'm amazed whenever someone voices this so matter of factly. The origins of the debate of good and evil (or justice and fairness) is an ancient one. Alright, I believe that it's unfair that the vast majority of people shall be doomed to suffer for eternity because they happened to come into existence as filthy awful sinful beings. Where do i get that idea? Where do I get the idea of fairness, if in fact it comes from God, but I have reached an entirely different conclusion than him? I guess my sinful human nature has warped the divinely bestowed "justice."

But can you imagine what it would be like if we governed ourselves according to God's justice where the majority was doomed and only a select few received divine revelation? I'm certainly glad that our fallen sense of fairness is the one we use when we interact with each other.

We are not forcing our religion on you and we ask you do the same. Most Wiccans/ pagans have nothing against the Christian religion or any other religion, nor are we telling anyone that they are wrong to believe what they believe. Most Wiccan/pagan believe that there can be many true answers and it is up to each person to find what best suites them. Last time I checked Freedom of religion, means ANY RELIGON and for those who don’t know what the word ANY means please check your dictionary. In conclusion, there are many religions in the world and none of them have been proven to be 100 percent true, which is why it is called faith. All we are asking for is to be left alone so we can practice our religion.

I believe that every god/goddess in every religion is just a different look at the same entity and that we choose the religion that fits us. If you notice many religions have the same principles, and instead of argueing who's right or wrong we should just show respect to each other and just continue to live a good life like every religion tells us to do.
