Despite a great final round from sophomore Christina Yoon, the Huskies fell to 10th place overall at the UNLV Rebel Spring Invitational after starting the day in seventh place.

Yoon had the best round of her competitive career, shooting a 5-under 67 in the final round of the tournament. She started the day tied for 16th but sank six birdies on her way to tie for third overall. “It was good of her to have that breakthrough round. It is her best competitive round ever,” coach Mary Lou Mulflur said.

Yoon sank her putts especially well today, shooting only one bogey. She finished the tournament with a score of 4-under 212. “I just went in with a positive feeling. I just wanted to stay positive the whole time,” Yoon said.

The Huskies shot a combined 10-over 298 in the last round and 24-over 888 for the tournament.

“It’s not what we were looking for, but we’ll learn from it and keep plugging away,” said Mulflur.

UW’s rival Washington State tied with BYU for first place in the tournament. Both WSU and BYU finished with a score of 5-under 859 and were the only schools to finish under par.

Cathryn Bristow of Oregon received top individual honors with a score of 8-under 208. Fifteen other players finished under par.

As for the Huskies, Anya Alvarez was the next-best finisher with a score of 4-over 220. She finished the tournament tied for 25th. Nicole Ferrero shot 12-over 228. Molly Aronsson slipped this last round, shooting an 8-over 80 and finishing the tournament at 16-over 232. Finally, Katie Saucier finished with a score of 19-over 235. Mulflur thinks the team can do better. “We need to trust our ability more,” she said. “We know we have the skill, but we haven’t been very confident.”

After playing tournaments three weeks in a row, the Huskies will take a well-deserved break. They will have until March 24 to rest and recuperate, and will then travel to Eugene, Ore. for the Duck Invitational.
