5:30 p.m. — SAM — Local organ jazz group Joe Doria Trio will give a free in-museum performance.

7:30 p.m. — McCaw Hall — The Pacific Northwest Ballet (PNB) presents four shows, three PNB premiers, as part of the “Director’s Choice” series. The featured performances will include Vespers, Für Alina, Sense of Doubt and One Flat Thing. All ages. $20-$150.

7:30 p.m. — Seattle Repertory Theatre — In the comedy How? How? Why? Why? Why?, playwright, performer, and frequent NPR contributor Kevin Kling examines how “tragedy can positively define a person’s life.” All ages. $10-$26. Additional performances through April 19.

7:30 p.m. — The Triple Door — Italian contemporary guitarist Peppino D’Agostino. $17 in advance, $20 day of show.

Friday, March 14

Movies opening today:

Doomsday: Reminiscent of last year’s 28 Weeks Later, this action/adventure film follows a team of specialists who must venture back into a desolate Scotland (the country was quarantined 25 years before after being infected by a pandemic) to find the cure to a resurfaced supervirus. Starring Rhona Mitra, Bob Hoskins and Alexander Siddig. Rated R.

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who: Jim Carrey returns for his second Dr. Suess adaptation, this time in the story of the elephant Horton, the only character able to hear the inhabitants of Whoville, a group of people whose planet is actually a speck of dust. Also starring Steve Carell, Dan Fogler, Carol Burnett and Seth Rogen. Rated G.

Never Back Down: Starring Sean Faris as an outcast student who learns the Mixed Martial Arts style of fighting to defeat the local bully. Also starring Cam Gigandet, Amber Heard and Djimon Hounsou. Rated PG-13.

Noon — Qwest Field Events Center — The Northwest Crafts Alliance hosts the 19th annual Best of the Northwest Arts & Crafts Fair featuring work by a variety of local artists. All ages. $8. Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

8:45 p.m. — ACT Theater — 13 short films comprise this year’s Rawstock Short Film Festival, ranging from animation to grindhouse to comedy. Live comedy by Laffhole founder Kevin Hyder will also be featured. $15.

Midnight — Egyptian — Brian De Palma and Al Pachino’s classic crime epic Scarface. Rated R.

Saturday, March 15

1 p.m. — Town Hall — Seattle Arts and Lectures presents two time Newberry award winner Lois Lowry. $20 general admission, $9 student (under 25 with ID).

7:30 p.m. — EMP — Shane King and Arne Johnson direct Girls Rock! — a documentary following the lives of three girls at a rock ‘n’ roll camp. $8 for EMP|SFM members (available by walk-up only), $9 for students or seniors with ID and $10 for general admission. Additional performances through March 18.

8 p.m. —The Paramount — Seattle pop-rockers the Presidents of the United States of America, along with opening acts Pleaseasaur and U.S.E., help celebrate The Paramount’s 80th Birthday. After the show a special 21+ “Keg and Cake” party with The Presidents will include complimentary Heineken, wine and cake and a live DJ. All ages. $23 in advance, $25 day of show.

8 p.m. (doors) — Showbox SoDo — Bee Simonds opens for an acoustic show by alternative rock group Floater. 21 and older. $10 advanced, $12 day of show and at the door.
