Judaism
Every week, every day, every hour is “adverse” in the life of a Jew. Unfortunately, this has been the case throughout history. Just last week, a madman barged into Yeshivat Merkaz HaRav, a religious school in Jerusalem, and took the lives of eight young boys studying the Torah.
The AP story that ran in The Seattle Times on page A9 last Friday read, “Gunman killed eight people and wounded nine before he was slain Thursday night.” As soon as I read this, I had questions: Why did I have to dig all the way to page nine? Why is the severity downplayed by lumping them together as “people”? They were innocent children between the ages of 15 and 26, not just “people.” These are the names of the children left out of the coverage — Avraham David Moses (16), Roi Roth (18), Neria Cohen (15), Yonatan Yitzhak Eldar (16), Yochai Lifshitz (18) Segev Peniel Avihail (15), Yehonadav Haim Hirschfeld (19), and Doron Meherete (26). It’s not fair to downplay their importance by leaving them nameless and faceless. Why is entertainment value placed on drawing the contrast between religious Jew and radical Arab?
Worse yet is that the UN Security Council wouldn’t even condemn the attack. This is the double standard the Jewish people have learned to live with. This is why Jews are united in times of tribulation. This is what has made community and family the emphasis of Jewish life.
The core of Jewish ideology is protecting and valuing the lives of everyone, especially women and children. When lives are taken, the nation as a whole feels violated.
Although I didn’t personally know any of the boys killed, I was brought to tears seeing their pictures and reading their stories. I know millions of other Jews had the same reaction. We’re a large family, but at the same time, a tiny fraction of the world’s population, so hearing about these eight young men has the feeling of having cousins murdered in cold blood.
The bloodhsed hit me close to home. I know about 20 people studying in Jerusalem this year, two of them best friends I grew up with. They’re in my prayers every day and there’s not much more I could do but have faith that G-d will protect them.
In the wake of this act of terror, Jews around the world came together to pray and to protest. Thusands attended the funeral in Jerusalem Friday. Thousands protested in New York Sunday. And millions of individuals are praying at this very moment for peace and respect for the lives of their brethren.
At the funeral, there was talk of sorrow and loss and of finding strength through the Torah. There were no words of revenge and no one calling for more bloodshed, because that’s not the Jewish way of solving problems.
The Jewish way is to pray and do good deeds in honor of the dead. The Jewish way is to give charity to the families who lose loved ones and to be by their side to comfort them. The Jewish way is to “love your neighbor like you love yourself” and with this in mind, value every human life and treat it with respect.
In times like these, the Jewish people are being tested for their strength and their faith in G-d. Even in such sorrow, the Jews in Israel have not forsaken their values. They continue to send humanitarian aid to Gaza. They treat wounded Arabs like their own, taking them to Jewish hospitals to save their lives, even when the lives of Israelis seem meaningless to some people. Israel continues to be a part of peace talks initiated by the Annapolis Conference and continues to strive for peace. Even when the “partner” for peace, Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah party, reacts to the massacre with the words “We bless the martyr [who carried out the shootings] with all the blood of the heroes of the resistance and with the soil of our land,” at this tough time when peace seems like a distant fantasy, the Jewish people continue to take the high road.

Christianity
“We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit” (Romans 5:3-5).
If someone said becoming a Christian would make life easy, they were wrong. If anything, it makes life much harder.
The easiness of a thing shouldn’t be a reason to do it. Christians accept and preach the gospel because they believe it’s true, not because it brings ease to their once complicated lives.
A Christian’s approach to tribulation isn’t to seek pain; it’s to learn from it and grow in wisdom. They don’t look for suffering to feel justified by it. However, they trust that its end is in God’s hands, and so there is nothing else to do but trust and learn from suffering.
The apostle Paul said to rejoice because God’s going to help you grow.
When I was a freshman, I attended a small Bible college in Portland. Through a series of events and situations, I decided to leave after the first quarter, and jumped into some community college courses. I didn’t make any friends for about a year.
After watching every Stargate episode on TV, I finally stopped running from my pain. I began over the pages of scripture; I dedicated myself to prayer and learning.
Although still lonely, God taught me contentment. I grew in faith and maturity like I never knew possible. Although I eventually made friends, I don’t have any regrets about that year.
I met God.
So what of peace? What of comfort? Most healthy communities will comfort a hurting member. Most people have comforted a friend. Scripture says that Christ’s disciples should be known by their love. This should be something that marks a Christian.
However, the result is nothing like what Paul calls “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding” (Philippians 4:6-7).
I’ve experienced this sort of peace. It tastes nothing like a best friend’s encouragement.
It’s unnatural and unreal. I can remember laying prostrate, weeping and praying before God, when he overwhelmed me with assurance and hope.
I might argue that hope is the peace of God.
A Christian’s endurance, therefore, comes from the hope they find in Jesus. It’s not just looking forward to Heaven. It’s the trust that everything, including both pain and joy, is ultimately for God’s glory, that we belong to Him and that He is in control.

Islam
Tough times can either be a time for spiritual strengthening or spiritual destruction. With Islam, tribulations are tests of faith. I’ve experienced both effects, getting closer to God and pulling away.
You know how it goes: The day you fail a midterm is the day you get a parking ticket, and the day you drop your cell phone in the toilet. Murphy’s Law, right? But all these inane problems are a chance for you to reflect. Am I going to flip out? Get ultra depressed? Or am I going to be reminded it’s all in God’s hands, and that in the grand scheme of things, it’s no biggie?
Those are all minor things, but what about a relationship that doesn’t work out? Or the death of a loved one? Or even, God forbid, a major disaster? Even these are in God’s power, and God has reasons for allowing them.
The Islamic perspective em-phasizes tawwakul, or reliance on God. We must always be aware that God is omnipotent and that everything happens by God’s will. So despite what happens, I’m comforted by the assurance that God gives in the Quran: “And, behold, with every hardship comes ease” (chapter 94, verse 5).
Part of relying on God, tawwakul, is the concept of sabr, or patience. It’s God’s prerogative whether our problems instantly disappear, but more often than not, they don’t. So being patient through hardship is an integral part of a balanced perspective. If you’re impatient, then you’re not truly practicing tawwakul.
But tawwakul is more than just docilely hoping things will get better; it requires action.
There’s a narration that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) noticed a Bedouin leaving his camel without tying it. He asked the Bedouin, “Why don’t you tie your camel?” The Bedouin answered, “I placed my trust in God.” The Prophet said, “Tie your camel and place your trust in God.”
The word used here for “trust” is tawwakul. This narrative stresses the importance of both trust and action, collectively. I have to work toward a solution to my grievances, be it a spiritual, mental or physical healing.
But why would God put us through adversity? The Islamic perspective is that God is testing us. In the Quran, it says: “Be sure we shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives and the fruits of your toil. But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who say, when afflicted with calamity, ‘To God we belong, and to Him is our return.’ They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance” (chapter 2, verses 155 to 157).
We are tested by both adversity and blessings. During bad times, do we remember God and ask for God’s help? Or do we reject God for afflicting us with tragedy? Or do we think it’s only due to our efforts when things are going well?
I have gone through some serious personal issues — and like most “emo” teenagers — suicidal thoughts. While in retrospect my problems were pretty minor compared to what other people face every day, they were still tough for me, and I was in despair. You could say my tawwakul was weak.
But over time I gradually accepted my situation as I realized God was in control, I accepted that because I at least felt by suffering immediate pain, God was protecting me from even greater pain further down the road.
I began to realize that adversity is just a test, and that my reaction will be reflective of the strength of my faith. With that type of perspective, I’ve found an easier time handling unfortunate situations.

If the point of the article concerning how Judaism deals with adversity was that it ignores reality and writes propaganda, then it succeeded magnificently. However, I don't think that is the truth, nor do I think it was the intention. Nevertheless, when the Torah advises people to "love your neighbor like you love yourself", I don't think it means to fire missiles into their backyard, nor do I think the value and respect the Torah places on human life is merely as collateral damage in the cost/benefit analysis of launching that missile. Let us be clear: the Israeli government is the Jewish State, elected by a great number of the Jewish people. Among other things, for the greater part of its existence it has engaged in a policy of colonization in order to systematically expropriate land from the inhabitants of the West Bank and Gaza. But most importantly, it has killed Arab civilians. It is possible that it was justified in doing so, but it is not possible that this is the way of taking the "high road." Let us call it what it is: meeting force with force. It may not be the Jewish Way, but recent history makes it clear that generally it is, for now, the Way of the Jewish people.

Would you guys consider presenting an Atheist point of view in your articles on religion? Atheism is rapidly growing in the US and on campus especially. It would be great to see some coverage and a more rational point of view from those that have left the fairy tales behind.

What in the world is so humanitarian about Israel murdering innocent Paletinian civilians? What's so peaceful about a massacre?

I would name all the names of the Palestinian children that died too, but sadly, there's too many of them to count individually by name. I'll probably never know their names either, since everyone in Gaza seems a little preoccupied, what with the prison-like, torturous conditions the Palestinian people are living under thanks to the "friendly" state of Israel and their "friendly" negotiation deals:

I hope you enjoy opening your eyes and clearing that thick fog of ignorance out of the air.

And more importantly, I'm hoping that the state of Israel doesn't represent the Jewish people, despite the fact that you're completely using the two things interchangeably. If it does in fact represent the Jewish people as a whole, then how could it be a true democracy, with only one people represented? What about the indigenous Palestinian Arabs?
The links I posted are only a small glimpse into the brutal world that the Israeli army, the Israeli "Defense" Force, creates for the indigenous Arab Palestinians in both Gaza and the West Bank.
It would be quite a shame to have the state of Israel be responsible for mass killings and the creation of sub-human conditions for Palestinians, all while representing Judaism. Kind of contradicts your whole point about "The core of Jewish ideology is protecting and valuing the lives of everyone, especially women and children."

I love history and John let me remind you of one of Israel’s greatest prime ministers Golda Meir, who fittingly was appointed to office a little less than 39 years ago on March 17 1969. One of her most famous quotes that I find as a direct argument for your “cost benefit analysis” is “We can forgive you for killing our sons. But we will never forgive you for making us kill yours.” Israel has no intentions of fighting and killing. During the Yom Kippur war, 1973, Israel essentially tripled its size and what did we do, we gave back the land to Egypt, and today we are constantly giving back land so we can live in peace.
Your argument that we shouldn’t fight and continue to accept the suicide bombings and random acts of terror by fanatics is wrong. Should America have stood by when we were attacked on 9-11? Israeli’s have no where to run, would you, or anyone stand idly by as someone destroys your property? Need I remind you that Israel is surrounded by enemies, another one of her quotes “The Egyptians could run to Egypt, the Syrians into Syria. The only place we could run was into the sea, and before we did that we might as well fight.” We are just fighting to survive and live our lives.
The article written here is in no way propaganda, students our ages are being murdered innocently while they learn how can anyone justify that? In the recent semesters there have been tragic college shootings across the U.S, and every time we mourn and condemn the acts. Why is it any different here? Terrorists came into a school and killed eight young men, for what? Studying? Learning? Why hasn’t this been condemned by the world yet? The way of the Jewish people is not to fight, it is to be among everyone else and live cohesively as a member of the world.
Thank you,
Biz

I like how you totally ignored the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza, BIZ. Really great way to let yourself run the standard Israel-only-provides-sunshine-and-bunnies story.
Last time I checked, Israel was not interested in giving back any land that it seized illegitimately (which I can argue is the country in it's entirety, but we'll save that for another time), especially the Golan Heights or the the West Bank. Just check the bajillion illegal settlements in the West Bank:
http://www.btselem.org/Download/Settl...
And the settlers aren't too friendly either:
http://www.mefacts.com/cache/html/ter...
By the way, that Golda Meir quote is really ridiculous. Why settle in a land that was already occupied by Palestinian Arabs in the first place? Oh yeah, that's right, God is a Jewish real estate agent. My bad.
So, basically, as country created by force and mass immigration to create a solid Jewish population, tell me why it's reasonable to expect Palestinians to succumb under complete Israeli control (aka Israel's control of Gaza's basic life need like water and electricity and the illegal settlements in the West Bank). Why do you expect Israel to kill over 100 Palestinian civilians and not expect any violent backfire? Why should Israel be considered the only peaceful one?
Oh, and the reason the UN security council did not condemn the situation because of the situation in Gaza and that members felt that unless that was also condemned they couldn't come out in support of Israel. You know, with the 100+ dead innocent Palestinian civilians. If one is to be condemned, then so should the other. Why condemn the killing of 8 and not condemn the other ~120?

I'd just like to make it clear that I haven't intended to express any judgment about the justification for retaliation by Israel. I just think it's a little bit disingenuous to represent the actions of Israel as so purely beneficent. Justified or not, the IDF kills people. It's far more complicated than the poor Israelis getting beat up by a cruelly anti-semitic world, giving nothing but honor, respect, and charity in return. There's a reason it's called a cycle of violence: both sides are engaged in it. If it is indeed the Jewish Way to value every human life, and to "take the high road", Israel is a poor example of this. In such a troubled part of the world, taking the high road may not be an option. If that is the case, let us not pretend that that is what is being done.

There are many kinds of suffering, some of which we inflict on ourselves, such as acts of violence and exploiting others. There are sufferings not caused by a person, such as illness and death. The best way for me to respond to suffering is to reflect on my own motives to be sure I'm treating other's right, and to accept what I cannot change. The latter is quite difficult for me.
I've found understanding in Judeo-Christianity's history of suffering as defined in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible or the Torah and Tannak. The beginning of both attribute suffering's cause to a broken intimacy between God and people as in the account of Adam and Eve, where suffering is a curse (e.g. toil, pain, death, separation from God's presence, dominance instead of equality and intimacy, and the presence of evil).
I've found assurance in God's promises for my present and future sufferings, that he will be my comfort, that suffering results in hope and love when endured, and that Jesus Christ will return one day a second time to set and heal what is broken.
Mainly, I've learned of myself that my main suffering is fear of loss of control or my way, even though such feelings result from other sufferings such as illness. But I find this reaction to suffering ineffective and almost more harmful than the original suffering itself. I wonder I think I'm entitled to live a life that defines its goodness by the absence of suffering. The trouble with that view is that it's unrealistic and really an attitude of entitlement, while it sets me up to use suffering's existence to question God's authority or his concern for my life.
The best response to suffering then is to trust God with my future, and to encourage others to endure. "The righteous shall live by faith" teaches the Tannak and Bible, where living by faith trusts and hopes.
In regards to the above comments (or rants) against the Judaism column, well I knew when I was reading the column that there would be rants posted against Israel at the end. The writer is correct. Jews have endured suffering in the form of dominance and violence from other groups. We do it to each other, and we must not advocate such violence by assigning blame to the "victim" or spewing hatred toward the aggressors.
In regards to the column on Islam's response to suffering, I learned patience is a virtue and I am not entitled to live a pain-free life though I want to.
I am a Christ-follower, and as such I look to Jesus' promise that he came so we would have life more abundantly than we would have had without him.
Thank you for writing these columns as I appreciate the respectful tone and the focus on monotheistic views.
