Dawgs look to build on success at UNLV Spring Invite

Fresh from a fourth-place finish in the Spartan Invitational last week, the UW women’s golf team will travel to Boulder City, NV for the UNLV Spring Invite today.

“We hope to build on the momentum we gained in San Jose last week,” coach Mary Lou Mulflur said in reference to the Spartan Invitational. The Huskies had an excellent tournament last week. They finished fourth and even had a chance to win. Even though they didn’t win, the pressure definitely didn’t get to them.

Coach Mulflur commented on the team’s demeanor during the tournament: “They weren’t afraid. They were excited, which is always a good thing.”

The team will look to sophomore Christina Yoon and freshman Nicole Ferrero to repeat their success this week. Yoon, who finished a career-high fourth place last week, is still getting better.

“She’s continuing to grow,” Mulflur said. “Her game is maturing and her mental game is maturing. I think she will get better and better.”

The team will also look for Ferrero to have a break-out game. She finished seventh at the Spartan Invitational last week.

“Ferrero played really well last week. I expect her confidence to be at a high level because of her success,” Mulflur said.

Rounding out the Husky lineup will be sophomore Molly Aronsson, freshman Anya Alvarez and freshman Katie Saucier.

“It’s such a good group. I don’t really care who the five are,” Mulflur said. “I think we have a chance to make some good things happen.”

The Huskies will need the whole team to play well, as this week’s field is tougher than the one they faced last week. The team will be facing BYU, Indiana, Washington State, Texas Tech, Oregon, San Francisco, UC Davis, Idaho, Campbell, Kansas State, Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, New Mexico State, Long Beach State, Sacramento State and host UNLV.

The tournament will be played on the par-72, 6,204-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club. “They set it up pretty short, so the scores will be low,” coach Mulflur said of the course.

Last year’s winner was then- sophomore Jennifer Shipley of Fresno State, and then-junior Kelly Nakashima of Idaho, who tied for individual honors at the tournament. BYU won the overall tournament with a score of 17-under 847. Nakashima will return, but Shipley will not.
