Weighing in on Super Bowl XLII

Following the Giants’ comeback Sunday night, some of The Daily’s sports writers were asked for their reactions to the game. Here’s what they said:

Christian Caple

Obviously, it wasn’t the outcome that I expected. But I’m just glad it was a close game. Now, finally, the Manning family might actually get some publicity. Did you know that Eli has an older brother that plays in the NFL also? I heard he even won a Super Bowl. Gee, that sounds like a great story. Wonder if anyone will pick up on that. Another thing that excites me about this game is that Tom Brady has been proven fallible. It won’t be long before Gisele leaves him, the Patriots cut him and the New York Post reports that he’s come out of the closet. See more about the Super Bowl from Christian Caple on page 10.

Not only am I nearly broke as a result of last night’s stunner, but I’ll also have some redecorating to do. That shrine dedicated to Tom Brady in my room is so coming down. I’ve gotta give it to the Giants, though. Their big bad defense came ready to shut the Pats down and Eli couldn’t have done a better job of keeping his cool.

For four years, Eli Manning has had to deal with people criticizing the way he plays and the emotionless demeanor he conveys while playing. As a fan, I couldn’t help but root for the guy as he moved the chains during that last drive, one improbable pass completion after another. He pumped his fists, grinned and acted like any rational human being would after throwing the go-ahead touchdown in the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, Tom Brady carries the same expression whether he’s lying on his back or connecting with Randy Moss in the end zone. Entertaining as it may have been to watch the Patriots put up 50, you can’t help but feel happy for Eli after a win like this. For once, the Super Bowl was worth the hype.

The Super Bowl game was an amazing upset. Everyone, including me, predicted that the Patriots would win and become the first perfect team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, but Eli Manning and the resilient Giants proved us wrong. The determining play of the game speaks volumes about their season. Eli Manning narrowly avoided a sack to throw a 30-yard completion to David Tyree into quadruple coverage. The Giants overcame adversity to defeat one of the best teams of all time and win a championship. I’m shocked and amazed at their success.

Erica Metzler

A low scoring affair turns into a shootout with a fourth quarter comeback. A lesser Manning prevails against all odds and halts a seemingly unstoppable Patriots team. With a disappointing loss, Tom Brady might have two Mannings on his list.

I have to admit that I missed most of the first half because I was covering the UW women’s basketball team’s complete blowout of Washington State (you probably missed the 84-40 thrashing on FSN while watching the Super Bowl pre-game). Good thing I caught the second half, because Eli Manning and the Giants completed perhaps the best two-minute drill in recent memory, so get ready for hundreds of Eli television commercials in 2008.
