Kustaa Mansfield of Delta Tau Delta performs a Mario skit for his talent in the Mr. Greek contest held by Alpha Gamma Delta last year.
The Alpha Gamma Delta sorority hosts the philanthropic event, where a majority of the fraternities within the Greek system enter to compete, raise money, gather support and ultimately put on an entertaining show.
Last year, Delta Upsilon member Clarke Reid was crowned the winner of the competition, which took place in a Kane Hall lecture room. Students from throughout the Greek system and their families came to witness the event.
“The money we raise each year goes to the Treehouse Foundation, which benefits foster children and diabetes research,” said Alexandria Hunter, a member of Alpha Gamma Delta. “Last year we raised a little over $27,000.”
Highlights from last year included a humorous Mario skit performed by Kustaa Mansfield of Delta Tau Delta. Mansfield was lifted off his feet by his black-clad brothers, giving the illusion that he was in fact Mario jumping over numerous obstacles and villains. Will Wilder of Phi Kappa Psi performed a rock ‘n’ roll ballad, and Nathan Crissey from Kappa Alpha Order performed a yo-yo routine.
According to Hunter, the event is growing larger in size each year, and this will be the final year it is hosted at Kane Hall. They will be shifting buildings to Meany Hall next year, in order to accommodate the growing audience.
“I just want [to stress] that this is not primarily a Greek-oriented event,” Hunter said.
The students at Alpha Gamma Delta welcome students and others from both UW and outside of campus, she said.
The competition is entertaining not only to members of fraternities and sororities, but to anyone with a good sense of humor and interest in extracurricular affairs at the UW, Hunter said.
This year’s judges include UW football quarterback Jake Locker, Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto and Miss Washington Teen USA Mandy Schendel.
