Rants & Raves

RANTS

Of the 143 million pounds of California beef recalled two weeks ago, about 50 million went to school lunch programs, and at least 20 million pounds were eaten.

Cyclone Ivan lashed Madagascar with wind and waves last week, cutting off contact with the southern part of the island.

RAVES

The U.S. military succeeded in blowing a defunct spy satellite to smithereens last week. The satellite’s 1000-pound hydrazine fuel tank posed a threat to people on the ground.

Western gray wolves are now off the endangered species list. About 1500 wolves now roam the Rockies.

I wouldn't call the removal of the Western gray wolves from the Endangered species list a rave by a long shot. Of course it's wonderful that their numbers are coming back and the same goes for any species that is recovering. The problem with removing species from the ESL is what happens next. With their removal comes the possibility of their being over-hunted again because they won't be monitored as in the past. The ESL needs a major overhaul putting in place ways to secure these animals' futures after their numbers increase. Until then, it is certainly not a rave.
