Slew of crimes plague U-District

Share

Local police were busy this weekend with a variety crimes committed in the U-District.

A female UW student was robbed Friday at about 12:15 a.m. while walking in an alley near the 4700 block of 18th Avenue Northeast.

The woman was walking past a dumpster in the alley when a white male jumped out, pointed a handgun at her and demanded cash. The victim surrendered her money and the suspect fled the area. The woman was not harmed.

The suspect was described as a while male in his 20s, medium build, wearing a jean jacket over a green hooded sweatshirt with a backpack. Seattle Police officers could not locate the suspect.

At about 2 a.m. Saturday, four UW students were assaulted in the 4700 block of 17th Avenue Northeast. As many as 10 suspects took part in the assault, some armed with bricks. The suspects fled before the arrival of police.

“When the police got there, there were no suspects,” Seattle Police Department spokesman Mark Jamieson said.

The suspects had been asked to leave a party earlier that night at another location, before they went looking for the victims and located them at their residence, the victims said.

Two of the injured victims required medical treatment at the UW Medical Center.

The suspects were described as a group of white and black males, all with muscular builds.

As of last night, none of the suspects had been taken into custody, Jamieson said.

About 6:20 p.m. Saturday, a man was stabbed at least twice in the 4500 block of University Way Northeast and sustained serious injuries. The man was treated at the scene and then taken to the hospital. His assailant, described as a man in his 20s, fled the scene and has not been found as of last night.

“We encourage anyone who has information to call the Seattle police,” Jamieson said.

The SPD can be reached at (206) 625-5011 and the UWPD can be reached at (206) 685-UWPD.

It' shameful that the police aren't instilling a fear into these low-life criminals. To be perfectly honest, it is most likely because they are afraid that in a town as blindly liberal as this, they will be accused of profiling. Well let me tell you something. If some jerk wears a dew rag, or baggy clothes, or just looks shady for any reason, he probably IS shady and will have no discretion for the well being of our community. He might go as far as to assault a defenseless woman. I say profile all you want Seattle Police. If they look suspicious, stop them and search them and ask them for ID's to check for warrants. Do your jobs. You all look retarded right now and everyone is laughing at your ineptness.

How bout you cruise the ave every once in a while and get the dirty filthy scum of the earth bums off the side of the streets. They are aggressive when they pan handle, and giving them money only encourages them. Make them earn their money, because it's their fault that they are cracked out. It's their fault that they are drunk. It's their fault that they won't work.

Cruise the ave and see who's not a student. If they are not, they don't really have a lot of business walking around campus or on greek row, or places close to school such as the ave.

This is OUR community.

Make our students feel safe.

I bet you look pretty shady yourself mister. We might as well throw you in jail just for being all suspicious like. Do everyone a favor and stop watching CSI and assuming it is a mirror image of reality.

Yo J,
Crimes against fashion are not crimes agianst humanity, and baggy pants do not constitute probable cause.
Read your constitution or go back to 1939 Berlin.

Hey, if someone wears a shirt at the airport that says "I will die for Allah" then that is suspicious to me. And I would applaud any policeman that would interrogate them.

If someone wears a dew rag, or a tupac shirt then he most likely is a piece of sh*t. These symbolize their affiliation with hip hop culture which is purely centered around violence. Hip Hop culture entirely is a big fat piece of sh*t. Don't even try to argue against this. If you love what it stands for then you should die, because it stands for murder and greed. Sure there are exceptions to the profiling generalization. But IN GENERAL these people are scum. You might get a few innocent people interrogated, but they have nothing to hide, so no loss. If you are worried about harmless people being profiled and searched and found in possession of weed (etc.) then they should know better than to dress like that and carry.

Or are you in favor of terrorists too?

Clearly, attempting to engage you in a rational exchange was a waste of my time. I was not aware that you were a dillusional paranoid schizphrenic.
I sincerely hope you are able to keep the terrorists, Tupac fans, the ghosts of soldiers who died at Appomattox, the purple people eaters, and anything else that might haunt you at bay.
Stay strong, bro.

Your a clown, and its not "dew rag". Hip-hop has nothing to do with this. You should just find a pillow case and put some holes in there and your set!!

If anything police don't nearly do enough on the Ave to protect the community. For such a small strip you would think they could handle cleaning the area up.

And quick question, why the hell would you walk in a dark ass alley at night?

We had thrown people out of a party I was at on the same night.

Dudes show up, group of black guy and a white guy or two and are asked to leave by the hosts.

One of them says, "Ask respectfully." (which they had been)

My brother told them, "No, this is their house and you need to leave." Luckily they didn't pull out any bricks.

What's wrong with people having a little respect? If it's not your house and you're asked to leave, why try to be a bad ass?

Based on their UW-related clothing they seemed to be students. Their needs to be more UWPD and Seattle PD foot patrols at night.

The police will not have to do anything to clean up the Ave and surrounding areas as long as UVillage remains bright, shiny, and photo-op worthy. They ignore the Ave.

A few years back (2003 or 2004) the FBI and DEA did a massive raid on the Ave between the blocks of 47th and 50th, shutting down an international drug running and coke running gang whose primary base of operation was the Jack in the Box parking lot. SPD's involvement? None...

Why is that when things like this occur in the U-District, there's barely any major coverage about it from any of the local TV stations or newspapers, and when someone gets assaulted in ANY OTHER PART of the city, it's reported on like we're sitting on the edge of a hedonistic crime wave?

Good point about "as long as u village is photo op worthy."

But seriously,

you U district police are a bunch of lazy retards. Get these thugs out of here. This is a place for higher education, not brutal crimes..

I know tons of people that are very angry about how little the UWPD and surrounding police actually do to protect us.

These are very legitimate concerns. As someone who has covered crime here on our beloved campus for the past year, I've heard and seen a lot of things that I find frightening and sad. I had the great regret of covering the untimely death of a UW employee last spring, and was tremendously saddened that violence touched our campus in such a devastating way. I, too, feel that more should be done to keep us safe.

In regards to my more flippant comments above, those were in response to an individual I found to be clearly irrational whose arguments were childish and counterproductive. That I chose to chastise this individual via mocking does not mean that I don't find these issues to be of utmost seriousness.

At the same time, I understand that policing any neighborhood, particularly one with such a seedy underbelly that has saddled itself up next to our campus, is hard work and I empathize with the UWPD and the work that they do. Having talked a lot to policemen in our area, I feel that I have come to appreciate all sides of this problem.

Typically, the Ave does not fall under UWPD, but rather SPD juristition, and the SPD are currently woefully understaffed in the north precinct, a problem which has contributed heavily to the crime in our area.

Clearly, more needs to be done to keep ALL areas on and near campus safe. We cannot call ourselves a "great institution" until this happens. The proponderence of crime in our neighborhood takes away from the pride of our great college.

I hope the UWPD puts more foot patrols and police up between about 45th and 50th, and particularly around greek row, when it is dark outside. We shouldnt be afraid to walk to our cars because of the dangers lurking around every corner... this crime wave in the udistrict has got to stop!

i am the mother of a male student from the eastside, and i try to keep up with seattle news online. the headlines this month in particular have been upsetting to say the least. parents do not expect their children to go off to school and be terrorized on or about campus. i would encourage you all to contact your legislators, the administration, and local city officials to voice your concerns loud and clear. and you should encourage your parents to do the same. if campuses like fordham and usc can keep their students safe, what the hell is with seattle? and by the way, if the u.s. news and world report college guide started reporting crime stats along with avg. sats, this problem would be addressed quickly.

I think that the police should pay close attention to the people at the bus stops on the ave. They look very very shady, particularly the bus stops north of 45th.

You have to wonder what these people are doing, just "hanging out" during the day when they probably should be working! Well, they probably are working, a DIFFERENT type of job.
