Sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan eyes a serve from opponent Roman Borvanov yesterday. Despite winning the first set 6-2, Nedunchezhiyan dropped the next two sets to lose to the higher-seeded Borvanov.
The former Nordstrom Open champion, Washington graduate Daniel Chu, was defeated in straight sets today by the Huskies’ current number one player, senior Patrik Fischer, 6-2, 6-3.
While Chu was dominant in his doubles play during his career at Washington, his attempt at a repeat singles title was ended today.
Fischer, on the other hand, has not dropped a set and is on his way to the semifinal round.
“I played really well today,” Fischer said. “I feel a little bad for [Chu] because I played so well … but it’s always special whenever you get the chance to play a teammate whether current or from the past.”
Fischer’s opponent in the semifinal round tomorrow will be the tournament’s top seed, Roman Borvanov, a graduate of the University of Portland.
He has only dropped one set thus far in the tournament, to UW sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, the Husky number two singles player.
In the bottom half of the bracket, two non-Huskies, Andrew Blackner and Taylor Hunt, will be battling for a spot in the finals.
Singles play will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
