The UW volleyball team had an interesting weekend in California. They were shut out for the second time this season by the No. 5 Stanford Cardinal, losing 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18. They recovered, however, and went on to sweep the California Golden Bears 25-18, 27-25, and 25-17 on Sunday. The sweep marks the first Berkeley loss of the Bears’ season, ending a 15-game home winning streak.

Three Huskies jump to block a kill attempt by Cal’s Hana Cutura. The No. 6 Huskies swept No.4 Cal 3-0 in Berkeley, Calif. yesterday.
The Huskies were stifled by a tough Stanford defense on Friday, which limited them to a .214 hitting percentage. Kindra Carlson notched double-digit kills, coming in with 12 on a .320 attack percentage, and setter Jenna Hagglund earned her fourth double-double on the season with 38 assists and 10 digs.
Washington also played well defensively, out-digging the Cardinal 54-43. The Husky effort was once again led by all-American Tamari Miyashiro, who had 12 on the night. Two other Huskies reached double-figure digs — Becky Perry and Jenna Hagglund — each with 10. Arial Salvo was only one dig away, with nine under her belt.
However, this was not enough to stop Stanford; the Cardinal hit .299 while committing only 12 total errors. Cynthia Barboza had 14 kills, and Foluke Akinradewo had 12 kills while hitting for a .632 attack percentage.
The Huskies managed to keep the sets close, though, especially the second.
The teams began the set tied at 4-4 before the Dawgs took the lead. The teams battled through another three ties before the Cardinal reeled off three straight points to take an 11-8 lead, forcing a Washington time out. Washington swung back on two kills by junior Jill Collymore to bring the score to 11-10.
Collymore gave the Dawgs some momentum, enough to ride to a 20-17 advantage. A Stanford kill and a Washington attack error put the Cardinal within one and sent Washington to another time out. After the break, the two teams tied 20-20, 21-21 and 22-22 before Stanford took a 23-22 lead and eventually a 25-23 win.
The Huskies played much better against the Bears. Hagglund again spread the ball around, notching 40 of the team’s 42 assists, and Huskies Becky Perry and Arial Salvo both had double-digit kills. As a team, the Huskies hit .298 and held the Bears to just .164. The Dawgs also led the Bears in kills (45-40), assists (42-38), service aces (2-1) and blocks (6.0-5.0).
Defensively, Tamari Miyashiro was ahead of the pack, leading the team with 19 digs. Perry, Salvo and Hagglund each chipped in an additional five, catapulting the Huskies to 38 digs on the game.
With the win over Cal, the UW improved to 17-4 on the season and 8-3 in Pac-10 play.
