President Emmert refuses pay raise

As the UW reels under the threat of an enormous budget slashing, salaries have been a major concern. Consistent with his aspirations to prevent the University as much financial suffering as possible, UW President Mark A. Emmert decided not to take a pay raise for the coming fiscal year at yesterday's Board of Regents meeting.

“We have determined that the President’s work has been exceptional,” said Regent Craig W. Cole

However, in keeping with Emmert’s wishes, there will be no compensation adjustment, he said.

He should! He should also take a pay cut and distribute some of his salary. Most staff at UW are not paid a decent, living salary and have to work 2 jobs, yet he gets paid WAY too much. Oh well, it the UW way!

My, what a great sacrifice by the second highest paid university president in America. He has an income of at least $1.2 Mil. and should take a pay cut. Univ. presidents are paid obscene amounts in this country and for what? They have all turned into glad handers to raise money so they can make even more. Its a racket!

I applaud President Emmert for declining a pay raise. In a time when most are out for only themselves he has the big picture in mind and is doing a small part to help. We could use more leaders like Emmert.

As for the comment on him taking a pay cut - Emmert is not the one responsible for UW staff pay. Perhaps this comment would be better redirected to our state employees in Olympia, or better yet, our Congress people in Washington, who get to vote on their own exorbitant pay raises on an annual basis.

Stop kissing ass! That's what he needed to do. Any person in their right mind would do as he did. 1.2Mil a year is WAY too much for a UW president. Remember, this is an academic institution and not a compnay.

I think he should take a pay cut like the president of WSU did. I mean most of us live off of very little. I am sure these guys can afford to take a $200-300,000 pay cut and save some jobs or programs for the school they so proudly represent.

In Pres. Emmert's salary defense, if you were to transfer his position to the commercial world.. with a corporation of equivalent number of employees, revenue, and in management of MULTIPLE research facilities, and MULTIPLE premier hospitals.. he would be making many times his current salary.
