Women’s soccer falls in second game of NCAA Tournament

It was Washington’s first NCAA tournament trip in four years, but UW was unable to advance beyond round two. The Dawgs’ 2008 tournament run came to an end Sunday afternoon with their 3-1 loss to Texas A&M.

The Huskies started out well in their second-round game against the Aggies, possessing the ball for the first part of the first half and producing several scoring chances.

However, the momentum shifted to the Aggies after a yellow card was called on Husky defender Carli Cearnal in the 26th minute. The ensuing free kick was deflected into the net for A&M’s first goal.

The Aggies kept the pressure on Washington in the second half, scoring two goals to take a 3-0 lead.

That gap proved too big for the Huskies to close, although the Dawgs did score in the 79th minute — off an Aggie defender.

Friday, the Huskies were placed in a similar situation but came back from a 2-0 deficit.

The Huskies started their first-round game on edge, but they beat LSU 3-2 in overtime to advance to the second round. Senior midfielder Jenna Robison scored the third goal in the 94th minute to give the Huskies the win and a berth in round two.

“It was an awesome feeling to get the game-winning goal, because the whole first half we really struggled and it was us getting our jitters out,” Robison said.

UW’s struggles included poor ball possession and several turnovers, allowing LSU multiple scoring chances.

“We were lucky to get out of the half 0-0,” Gallimore said.

The Huskies’ lackluster play carried over to the second half as the Tigers scored twice. The turning point was freshman midfielder Kate Deines’ goal — the Huskies’ first — in the 61st minute.

“Kate getting the first goal was huge because it gave the team some confidence,” Gallimore said. She added that LSU started to look tense after Deines’ goal.

UW then tied the game on junior forward Veronica Perez’s 13th goal of the season in the 82nd minute.

“[I’m] really excited to get the first playoff win, especially in the fashion we did,” Robison said.
