Men’s soccer can’t compete against Bay Area schools

Records were broken and streaks were snapped during Friday night’s men’s soccer game against Stanford. Things looked optimistic for the Huskies, as Stanford had lost four straight games and had also fallen to the Huskies earlier this season in Seattle.

Stanford, however, proved that they aren’t to be taken lightly. The game started quickly for them; the Cardinal was up 2-0 in the first half and didn’t back down offensively in the second.

Washington came out onto the pitch in the second half, looking to turn things around after having been outshot and outscored by the opposition, but another Stanford shot flew past the Husky goalkeeper, redshirt junior Rylan Hawkins, extending their lead to 3-0.

A Husky offensive effort finally paid off in the 74th minute of play when freshman Dylan Tucker-Gangnes and senior Raphael Cox assisted junior Daniel Phelps in scoring the first UW goal.

Even with an extensive lead, the Stanford offense didn’t let up. They were able to score again five minutes after Phelps’ goal with an unassisted 25-yard shot that went just above Hawkins’ reach and into the net. Though this was the most goals allowed by the Huskies during a game all season, Hawkins tallied a career-high seven saves.

“It was great to be able to get back in at net,” Hawkins said.

In response to the last Cardinal goal, Cox connected a penalty kick for a UW score in the 80th minute.

For the last 10 minutes of the game, neither team was able to score, giving Stanford a 4-2 win and ending their four-game losing streak.

On Sunday, the Huskies were tested by Cal, the two-time defending Pac-10 champions. Washington was able to get on the board first this time when Tucker-Gangnes collected a rebound in the 26th minute of play and beat the keeper to the right side for an unassisted goal. Unfortunately, that proved to be the only fruitful offensive effort for the Huskies, and Cal came away with a 2-1 victory.

“The loss is tough,” Hawkins said. “But we’re using this as motivation because we don’t want it to happen again.”
