The UW men’s and women’s crew teams finished off the fall season with a bang yesterday, winning six of seven races at the Head of the Lake Regatta in Lake Union.
The Huskies competed in a series of 3-mile head races against nearby college teams, sending out a lot of boats and proving their abilities with strong showings at every level.
In the men’s eight, the Dawgs took first place with a 13-second victory over the second-place University of British Columbia crew, while a second UW team was disqualified for missing a buoy. In the men’s four, the Huskies took the top four spots, with an impressive best time of 16:53.53.
The only Washington loss came when the team finished third and fourth in the JV men’s eight.
“We’re pleased that the guys performed the way we thought they should,” said men’s coach Michael Callahan.
The women impressed as well, winning every race in which they competed — including the women’s eight against Washington State, a race in which the Cougars defeated the Huskies twice last year.
The greatest sign of changing tides came through the performance of the JV eight crew, who won their race by a wide 43-second margin — with a time that was also two seconds faster than WSU’s varsity.
“The fact that our varsity and junior varsity eight times are so close speaks to the depth of our program,” said women’s coach Bob Ernst.
The UW women took the top three spots in the women’s four and saw little competition from other teams.
“We’re headed in the right direction,” Ernst said. “I’m very pleased with our performance today.”
With the conclusion of yesterday’s regatta, the fall season has ended for the Huskies. The team will now have a four-and-a-half month break from competition before resuming play in late March.
