Volleyball seeks revenge in California

On Oct. 5, the UW volleyball team was swept at home twice for the first time since the 2000 season.

Junior outside hitter Megan McAfee bumps the ball late in the match against WSU Oct. 24. The team plays Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. today at 7 p.m.

This weekend the UW will face No. 5 Stanford and No. 4 California for the second time — this time on the road — looking to get revenge.

“We’re really excited to show everybody what we’ve been working on,” libero Tamari Miyashiro said. “I know that they’ll put up a fight, but if we do our thing we’ll be ok.”

The Huskies are in the middle of a five-match winning streak, and have three players averaging more than three kills per set: Jill Collymore, Becky Perry and Kindra Carlson.

“I definitely know we are an improved team from then,” Miyashiro said. “I think that we have improved a lot in just about every skill.”

With their impressive 7-2 Pac-10 record, the Huskies are one of only three teams in the conference that still control their own fate. If the Dawgs win both matches this weekend, they can force a three-way tie for first.

“You try not to focus on that, but I think in the back of your head you probably are thinking about it,” Miyashiro said. “The way we get in position to win the Pac-10 title is to take care of today.”

On Halloween night, the Huskies will be far from their comfort zone, in the Cardinal’s home. This season, Stanford has only one home loss — to Cal.

Stanford (17-3, 8-1 Pac-10) has done well in all facets of the game, especially defense. The Cardinal has allowed only three teams this year to hit over .250, and has limited 13 teams to below a .200 hitting percentage.

The Huskies will then face off against the fourth-ranked Bears Sunday. Cal hasn’t lost a game on its home court since September of last year — good enough for a school record 15-match home winning streak.

“Every team in the Pac-10 is dangerous at home,” Miyashiro said. “People just play better when they’re at home, so it’s kind of expected.”
