Closing the tournament with an impressive score of 13-under par, Anya Alvarez led the UW women’s golf team to a solid fifth-place finish yesterday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
Playing well every day of the three-day tournament, including an exceptional 6-under par Tuesday, Alvarez proved her potential, with a fourth-place finish in the individual standings.
“Her play was not surprising, she’s very capable,” coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. “It was nice to see her put it together three days in a row.”
Along with Karinn Dickinson and Molly Aronsson, Christina Yoon stepped her game up, proving to be a pleasant surprise. Mulflur is still looking for a reliable fourth and fifth player for the team, and with her even-par for the tournament, Yoon appears to be in position to take one of them when the season resumes next fall.
“She definitely played better,” Mulflur said of Yoon, “but we expect that kind of play out of her.”
As the season comes to its winter break, taking four months off before resuming in February, the players will get some time to focus on the fundamentals.
“Everybody will be working hard over the break,” Mulflur said. “Now is the time to work on any changes we see fit in the swing.”
When the season resumes next year, the Huskies will have a full slate of tournaments leading up to the Pac-10 championships in late April, and possibly the NCAA tournament in early May.
For Mulflur, though, the team needs to be focusing on its play right now.
“We just need to keep getting better,” she said. “Keep working at it.”
