Search for new School of Law dean continues
While everyone’s focus may seem to be on the upcoming presidential election, there is another position waiting to be filled on campus. The UW School of Law has been without a dean since the resignation of W.H. “Joe” Knight Jr. last year, and after a committee was formed to find someone to take Knight’s place, potential candidate Mary Anne Bobinski was offered the job. However, Bobinski declined the position and a second committee has been formed to continue the search. The group is looking for community feedback on the search through several interactive methods, including a series of discussions taking place this afternoon from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in room 138 at William H. Gates Hall.
Student writes new UW Song
For many students, the words “Bow Down to Washington”, or any mention of an official campus song, have little meaning. The UW hopes to change that with the latest song intended to represent the university, “Rise Up With Pride For Washington”. Senior Catherine Henderson won the New Song of Washington contest along with $1,000, a lifetime membership with the UW Alumni Association and, with any luck, a song that students will remember beyond the football season. The song will be performed for the public for the first time at the Arizona State football game Nov. 8.
Lecture hall filled for financial crisis discussion
Interest, curiosity and, more likely, anxiety led students and faculty to fill Kane 210 to capacity Tuesday for a panel discussion about the recent financial crisis. Surprisingly, the three finance and economics experts featured explained that the proposed — and controversial — bailout bill would be helping out the economic system as a whole and not simply “Wall Street fat-cats”. Whether or not the words of the panelists will ring true came closer to being seen this week, with the economic rescue proposal passing in the Senate Wednesday.
ASUW starting new outreach program
For new students walking amidst the sea of club booths often stationed outside the HUB, looking into any activity on campus could seem overwhelming. ASUW is hoping to help ease that feeling for incoming freshmen with a new six-seminar course in which students are paired with a personal ASUW faculty mentor. The ASUW Ambassadors program will be geared toward furthering participation in ASUW clubs and helping students work toward their individual goals.
Bacteria in Drumheller Fountain being tested
Anyone thinking of cooling off from the recent heat with the water from Drumheller Fountain may want to reconsider. Last week a team of researchers from the Department of Environmental Health and Safety began testing to see if the spray coming from Drumheller Fountain contains any unhealthy bacteria. Completed tests have shown that while there are levels of bacteria present, the material found so far has been completely harmless.
