Women’s golf looks to rebound in last fall tourney

Coming off a disappointing second-to-last place finish a week ago at the Stanford Intercollegiate, the UW women’s golf team will be looking to get back on track, starting today at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.

This tournament will be the Huskies’ last of the fall, before the team takes a nearly four month break, resuming again in February. Because of this, the Huskies know that there is added importance to the next three days.

“This is the last competitive event for a while,” coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. “So we want to end on a high note.”

This tournament’s 18-team field features some difficult opponents, with four teams ranked ahead of the Huskies according to Golfweek magazine. However, these opponents are relatively weak in comparison to the overwhelming strength the UW played against last week.

Although Mulflur agrees that they have faced stronger competition, the team won’t be paying much attention to how everybody else is playing.

“You look at who you’re paired with, but you can’t control what the rest of the field does,” she said.

While sophomores Anya Alvarez and Karinn Dickinson have been carrying the team, the Huskies are looking for more consistency out of their four and five players to get the kind of results they know they are capable of.

“We’re playing with our third different lineup in as many tournaments,” Mulflur said. “These girls have to step up.”

According to Mulflur, the course is pretty wide open, so she expects low scores and believes the team is ready to capitalize.

“We’re reared up and ready to go.”
