The Huskies came out swinging against WSU Friday.

Washington dominated all three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-17), taking the UW’s overall record to 16-3 and 7-2 in the Pac-10.

The Huskies offense was once again well-steered by setter Jenna Hagglund, who moved into the seventh place on the all-time UW assist list.

The humble setter was quick to credit her teammates for their roles against the Cougars.

“It’s a great accomplishment, and it’s a lot about my hitters and the people I get to set,” Hagglund said. “I can’t get an assist without a kill, so it’s definitely a tribute to how well we’re hitting.”

The Huskies attack was balanced through the three sets with junior Jill Collymore and sophomore Kindra Carlson leading the way with 13 kills and 11 kills respectively. Both players hit over .500.

Hagglund, though, was most efficient on offense, notching .800 attack percentage on four kills in five swings. On top of that, she contributed 42 assists, six digs and two block assists.

“She’s a talented kid, and she just keeps getting better and better,” coach Jim McLaughlin said.

As a team, the Huskies hit for an incredible .414 percentage while limiting WSU to a meager .175.

“We kind of locked in defensively and put some pressure on them,” McLaughlin said. “I thought, as the match progressed, we were in better spots.”

The UW’s defense was once again led by junior libero Tamari Miyashiro, who scooped up 14 digs, which brought her within 417 digs of the all-time Husky lead.

The Huskies dominated all sets, but their best showing came in the second.

As a team, Washington nearly hit .500, limited WSU to only .143 and won 25-13.

Despite the success, McLaughlin is always looking for his team to improve.

“We’re at the halfway point and, traditionally, we’ve always been better in the second half,” McLaughlin said. “This team needs to keep that tradition intact, and we can do that by continuing to train at a high level and getting better.”
