Huskies make impressive run, upset in final rounds

With a recent history of title droughts and close finishes at the annual ITA West-North Regional Tournament, 10 members of the Washington men’s tennis team headed to Berkeley, Calif. hoping to end that drought.

Last year, Husky senior Andy Kuharszky was beat in the final round of the singles draw. This year, senior Patrik Fischer and sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, who were given the No. 3 and No. 6 seeds, were hoping to do better.

Washington did very well in the opening rounds, with six players still alive in the main draw after the second round. The third round, however, proved to be a different story as three Huskies were knocked out, including junior Derek Drabble and sophomores Martin Kildahl and Alex Rosinski, who dropped straight sets to the No. 9 seed, Marco Verdasco of Oregon.

The round-of-16 was not so sweet to the remaining Huskies as Fischer and Nedunchezhiyan, along with senior David Chu, who had also advanced, were upset in this round by California opponents.

On the other hand, Washington doubles play fared much better. Fischer and Nedunchezhiyan were given the top seed and proved they earned it by advancing to the finals to play against the second seeded pair from Cal. The pair suffered its second upset of the tournament the following day, dropping the final match 8-5.
