After starting the season on a high note two weekends ago, the women’s golf team failed to repeat its success this weekend at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
The tournament’s difficult 16-team field kept the Huskies at the bottom of the standings throughout the weekend; they finished in a disappointing 15th place.
None of the Huskies seemed to be able to deliver the performance needed to lead the team to victory.
Sophomores Anya Alvarez and Karinn Dickinson led the team with scores of 5-over-par and 7-over-par, respectively, but those were good for just 29th and 38th overall in the individual standings.
Coach Mary Lou Mulflur is positive that Alvarez and Dickinson can perform better than they did, but she also pointed to how important it is for the rest of the team to step it up.
“Anya and Karinn played really solid but can’t be expected to carry the team every week,” Mulflur said.
As for the team standings, Pac-10 powerhouses UCLA, USC and Stanford took the top three spots in the final standings, with the first place Bruins finishing an impressive 49 shots ahead of the Huskies.
Despite this, Mulflur is confident the team has the talent to stick with the top of the pack in future tournaments.
“We know we can compete,” Mulflur said. “We just need to find more consistency from the entire team.”
The Huskies won’t have much time to find this consistency, though, as the team will tee off at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown next week.
