Men’s soccer unbeaten streak snapped

The 23rd-ranked Washington men’s soccer team was handed its first loss in more than a month during its recent road trip to California. The Dawgs were riding a six-game unbeaten streak and went into their matches against UCLA and San Diego State with sole possession of first place in the Pac-10.

After the first of last weekend’s matches, Washington now shares the top spot with the Bruins, who fell to 2-0 last Friday.

It didn’t take the Bruins long to get their attack going as they scored a pair of goals in the first half, forcing Washington to chase from the 18th minute.

The rest of the match remained scoreless for both teams, which is out of the norm for the Huskies. The team had not been held scoreless yet this season. In addition, the Bruin backline was able to limit Washington to a season-low of six shots. Had it not been for Stephen Fung, who tallied five saves, the final score would have been more detrimental to the Huskies.

On Sunday, the Huskies took on the San Diego State Aztecs, hoping for a better result.

“The team was really hungry for a win from the disappointment we had against UCLA on Friday,” Fung said.

Washington got its wish when it got on the board first against San Diego State with freshmen forwards Brent Richards and Dylan Tucker Gangnes applying pressure on the left side of the field. Gangnes received the ball from junior midfielder Raphael Cox and flicked it to Richards, who scored from 15 yards.

It didn’t take long for the Aztecs to find the equalizer, as they scored less than five minutes later on a free kick.

By the end of regulation, the teams were tied at one and went into overtime.

This time around, Cox scored the UW’s second goal as well as the game-winner, which landed in the corner of the net.

The San Diego State offense seemingly ran out of fuel as no shots on goal were made during overtime.

As a result, Washington was able to walk away from San Diego victorious, 2-1 over the Aztecs.

The Huskies will have another chance against these schools this weekend, as they will be hosting UCLA and San Diego State at the Husky Soccer Field.
