Goodwill store to open on the Ave
Second hand clothing stores on the Ave may find themselves with a bit more competition beginning next month, with the opening of a new Goodwill at 4552 University Way. While the store will be the third Goodwill in Seattle, it is the first of the company’s new business model which consists of naeighborhood-based stores. The design will be almost one-fourth the size of typical company stores, and will not be accepting donations because of its smaller size.
Emmert gives annual address to UW community
University of Washington President Mark Emmert gave his annual address to the community Tuesday, discussing fundraising goals, recent achievements made by UW students and staff, and future plans for the University. Emmert reassured those attending that despite the current economic crisis, the University is actually exceeding expectations financially, surpassing a fundraising goal made eight years ago by $657 million. After addressing these financial concerns, Emmert outlined the direction the University planned on taking over the next several years. These important, though rather broad areas of focus include health care cost control and prevention and an examination of alternative energy sources. The event was attended by UW students, alumni, regents and faculty.
UW police accused of discrimination
The University of Washington police department is being sued by five current and one former employee of the UWPD. The employees filed suit against the University last week for damages related to a range of discriminatory charges, including allegations of age, racial and sexual orientation discrimination. UWPD officials, as well as Norm Arkans, UW spokesman, declined to comment on the specific allegations. The University has yet to release an official statement.
New UW Village deals with dorm overcrowding
Future UW students faced with the constant dorm overcrowding should find some relief in a new housing community: UW Village. The new buildings will be located on the west side of campus, and will not only include dorm housing for freshmen and sophomores, but apartment-like residences for upper-level, graduate and professional students as well. The University of Washington Housing and Food Services (HFS) has decided on the project as a solution to current residence hall space issues and much needed building renovations. The facilities will differ from traditional dorms in that they will include more student resources, different building layouts and potential recreational areas. The Board of Regents has approved an architect for the site and the facilities are expected to be completed by 2014.
