After coming off impressive down-to-the-wire five set wins over UCLA and USC, the UW volleyball team will look to earn its firs home wins in their Pac-10 schedule against No. 6 Oregon and No. 25 Oregon State this weekend at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
The Huskies hope that sophomore setter Jenna Hagglund can repeat her 113 assist, two double-double weekend against the Ducks and Beavers.
“You know, I didn’t expect it,” Hagglund said. “You aren’t playing to get an award. You are just doing your job as best as you can. It’s a nice bonus.”
She is the first Husky to be so honored since Sanja Tomasevic in 2005.
The Ducks and Beavers have some fire power of their own however, and will look to disappoint a Husky home crowd that ranks 19th in the country in attendance.
“We love playing at home,” Hagglund said. “We have the best fans. We want to keep packing the house and we want to keep winning for them.”
And the fans will have quite a show. The Huskies are especially eager to fill their student section.
“They’ve helped us; they’ve helped build this program,” coach Jim McLauglin said. “They really give us an advantage when they’re there screaming for us. We’re just hoping that they come out on both Friday and Sunday.”
No. 6 Oregon is enjoying its highest ranking in the school’s history. They come to Hec Ed with a 14-3 overall record and a 3-2 mark in Pac-10 play.
The Ducks’ offense is led by senior outside hitter Gorana Maricic who averages a devastating 4.04 kills per set and 4.69 points per set, good for third and second in the Pac-10, respectively.
“She’s a legitimate outside hitter,” McLaughlin said. “She can move the ball around, she jumps high and can hit hard. We’ve got to stay on her.”
Oregon’s defense is led by senior libero Katie Swoboda who leads the Pac-10 in digs with 5.13 per set.
The UW has come out on top the last 14 times these two teams faced off and leads the all-time series 52-16. Oregon’s last win over Washington came in 2000, before the McLaughlin era.
No. 25 Oregon State is also a dangerous team. The 12-6 Beavers earned their first top 25 national ranking since 1996.
“They’re having a good year,” McLaughlin said. “They have all their kids back from last year on a team that I thought did a good job at times.”
The Beavers are 1-4 in the Pac-10 with their only win coming against USC.
OSU’s offense is led by junior outside hitter Rachael Rourke, who averages 3.78 kills per set.
“She’s a good player from Australia,” Mclaughlin said. “She’s a strong physical player that can really hit the ball.”
OSU’s defense is anchored by libero Ashley Evans who has 3.13 digs per set — just ninth in the Pac-10.
OSU’s last win over the Huskies came in 2001 on a five set match. The Huskies have come out on top the last 10 in a row and lead the all time series 43-21.
