Streak on the line for men’s soccer team

With a six-game unbeaten streak, the Washington men’s soccer team (7-3-1, 2-0-1 Pac-10) will be continuing their road trip this weekend in California against UCLA (3-4-5, 1-1-1 Pac-10) and San Diego State University (3-5-2, 1-0-2).

Junior defender Casey Cunningham heads the ball in an attempt to score a goal. The Huskies play UCLA in Los Angeles, Calif. tonight.

“I think the team is set up perfectly for this portion of the Pac-10 season because our unbeaten streak has increased our confidence,” sophomore defender Jamie Finch said. “Winning on the road is always tough, but we showed we could do it when we went to South Carolina for Furman and College of Charleston, and again last weekend against OSU.”

After last week’s win on the road over Oregon State, the Huskies climbed to the top of the Pac-10, but they will be facing the two teams that are right behind them in the conference.

Tonight the Huskies will be battling UCLA in a match for the top conference spot. However, if the Bruins are able to pull out a win, they would still have to share the lead with Washington.

It won’t be an easy task for the Huskies to hold onto sole possession of the top conference ranking. UCLA earned their biggest victory, 3-2 over two-time Pac-10 defending champion No. 6 California, last weekend in overtime, a team Washington held to a 2-2 double-overtime draw.

The Bruins also lead the all-time series against Washington, 15-11-2, but the gap seems to be closing, with Washington winning in their most recent meeting last season in Los Angeles, 1-0.

“In terms of competition, going to UCLA is always a tough trip, as UCLA has been the powerhouse of the conference for a long time,” Finch added. “Last year we showed that we could win there, and with the streak we are on, I don’t see why we can’t do it again this year.”

On Sunday the Huskies will take on San Diego State, a team that has an extremely well rounded offense that will keep Washington on its toes. The Aztecs have five players that have registered three goals this season. It will be up to Washington goalkeepers, redshirt sophomore Stephen Fung and redshirt junior Rylan Hawkins — who have shared time at the net — to stop the SDS attack.

For the Husky attack, the two offensive leaders looking to score are freshman forward Brent Richards and senior midfielder Raphael Cox, both of whom have tallied five goals so far.

“The team knows that this is a very important weekend,” Cox said. “And we know we’re ready because we have trained very hard this week to prepare.”

This weekend’s games will mark the end of the first half of Washington’s conference slate and will serve as a good indicator of where Washington will be in the postseason.
