Volleyball team wins nail-biters in Los Angeles

The Huskies gave coach Jim McLaughlin a few more grey hairs with their down-to-the-wire five-set wins over No. 8 UCLA and No. 11 USC this weekend, improving their record to 13-3.

The win against USC marked the first time anyone had beaten the Trojans in the Galen Center since it opened, marking the end of a 32-match home winning streak for USC.

“It was good to get two W’s in LA,” McLaughlin said. “I don’t think we’ve ever gone down and won both.”

The upset over UCLA came on a kill by sophomore Becky Perry in the fifth set to put the Huskies up 15-11. Perry paced the UW offense, putting up incredible numbers. She had a career high 33 kills, 76 attacks and 35 points while striking a .289 attack percentage.

“She was aggressive, she had good rhythm, good timing and took some heavy swings on the ball,” McLaughlin said. “I’m proud of her.”

Sophomore setter Jenna Hagglund also had an excellent match. She notched her first season double-double after racking up 56 assists and 25 digs.

The match itself was incredibly close. The UW took the first set 25-23, but dropped the next two 22-25, 22-25. Set four was a battle closely fought by both teams and neither team had a dominant lead for the first 38 points until senior Jessica Swarbrick served the Huskies on a six-point scoring run to put them up 22-16 — a lead they would not lose. The Huskies won the set 25-18.

The deciding fifth set was just as exciting as the previous four. The UW started the set well with a block by junior Airial Salvo and freshman Bianca Rowland, but UCLA jumped out to an early 3-2 lead. The Huskies and Bruins tied at every point between three and seven when a kill by Salvo and an attack error by UCLA’s Julianne Piggott gave the UW momentum.

After a UCLA time out, Hagglund and Rowland combined for a block to put Washington up 10-7. UCLA countered with two points of their own, which forced a Husky time out.

Bruin Ali Daley’s kill tied the score at 10 but the UW took the next two points and never relinquished the lead, finishing the match with a 15-11 win.

The match against USC was just as close. USC took the first set 22-25, followed by two UW wins: 25-21 and 25-23. The Trojans controlled most of the fourth set, ultimately wining 25-23 and forcing another deciding fifth set, the UW’s fourth in as many Pac-10 road games.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 3-1 lead, but the UW took back the lead at 4-3 when Perry and Swarbrick chimed in with a kill each and the Trojans made an attack error. The Trojans tied the score at 4-4 and 5-5, but Perry and the Huskies were too much, going on a three-point run to take an 8-5 lead which they never gave up, ultimately winning 15-9.

Sophomore setter Jenna Hagglund got her second double-double of the season, putting up 57 assists and 11 digs.

“She did the things we worked on all week,” McLaughlin said. “That was the best part of the weekend, the return on the work we’ve put in.”

The Huskies will return home to take on the Oregon schools this weekend at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
