In their lone match this weekend, the Washington men’s soccer team (7-3-1) improved its unbeaten streak to six, one of its most dominant runs in years.
The Huskies took on the Oregon State Beavers (3-6-3) in Corvallis, Ore., Friday. Washington had the task of stopping the Pac-10’s leading scorer, Robby Christner, but the Husky defense made it difficult for him to assert his usual striking dominance. Christner was limited to only one shot on goal in addition to scoring OSU’s lone goal.
However, the unassisted Beaver goal didn’t make a difference because it came in the 84th minute. It was too little, too late for OSU; they simply couldn’t score under the pressure of the clock and the Huskies won 2-1.
That is not to say the Beavers didn’t have a strong attack. Christner had a chance early in the game to score, but Husky goalie Stephen Fung blocked the shot.
“Letting a shot in and also making a save kind of cancels out what I do,” Fung said. “Making a mistake at goal can be real costly ... but everyone [was] playing well, having a good game, and everything just clicks.”
The Husky offense, on the other hand, forced OSU goalie Steve Spangler to make seven saves. Though Washington outshot OSU 18-9, the Huskies were only able to capitalize on two of those scoring attempts.
Just more than a minute into the second half, Husky freshman Brent Richards received an assist from senior midfielder Raphael Cox and made a shot past the OSU goalkeeper. The goal was Richards’ fifth of the season.
The Washington offense was clearly applying more pressure as the game progressed. Junior midfielder JoJo Katz took advantage of a corner kick from the right side in the 78th minute to put the Huskies up 2-0.
The Husky backline was able to hold strong, giving Washington a 2-1 victory and preventing potential overtime.
With another Pac-10 win, Washington now leads the conference, followed closely by UCLA and San Diego State. The Huskies will continue their road trip next weekend against those two teams.
