Huskies look to extend unbeaten streak

The Washington men’s soccer team is riding a five-game unbeaten streak right into Corvallis, Ore. where it will be taking on Oregon State tonight. By beating Stanford and tying California, the two-time defending Pac-10 champions, 2-2 in double-overtime, the Huskies received ranking votes in the NSCAA/adidas and the Soccer Times.

Freshman forward Brent Richards is tackled by Cal’s Jacob Wilson. The Huskies tied the game 2-2 in the second half, and the score remained tied through two over-times Oct. 5.

Today’s game is Washington’s first away match since the start of its five-game homestand last month where the team went 4-0-1. Although they currently possess a 6-3-1 record overall and are 1-0-1 in the conference, the Huskies will be riding the momentum of their time at home.

The Beavers faced the same conference opponents as the Huskies did last week, but they did not fare as well. Oregon State fell 3-0 to California and battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with Stanford. Both of these matches were played in Corvallis.

Although their offense struggled against the Bay Area schools last weekend, OSU striker Robby Christner leads the Pac-10 in goals with six.

Washington will counter with a solid defense.

Redshirt junior Rylan Hawkins and redshirt sophomore Stephen Fung are still splitting time at goalie, but both have the numbers — 10 and 12 saves, respectively — to show they are equally qualified to anchor the veteran backline with juniors Casey Cunningham and Taylor Hoss.

The Husky offense is no slouch either. The UW is tied for 22nd in the nation and first in the Pac-10 with two goals per game.

Leading this attack is senior midfielder Raphael Cox and freshman forward Brent Richards, who leads the conference with four shots per game.

Even though Washington’s all-time series record against OSU shows a fairly reassuring dominance at 28-7-3, the last three meetings with the Beavers were somewhat inconsistent. In fact, the Huskies’ last win over the Beavers was in 2006 when they won 2-1 in Corvallis. The last two meetings didn’t go so well for the Dawgs, who played to a draw and lost in overtime last season at home.

Washington coach Dean Wurzberger understands the stakes with his team looking to extend its unbeaten streak to five with a win tonight.

“It’s no surprise that these Pac-10 games are going to be tight,” he said.
