Golfers shine at Husky Invitational

Led by Chris Killmer’s outstanding five-under performance, the Washington men’s golf team took the first day of the Husky Invitational in a dominating fashion.

The team’s two-round score of 565 was enough to give them a seven-stroke lead over second place Cal.

Coach Matt Thurmond was more than pleased with his squad’s performance.

“It was really just a good all-around day,” said Thurmond. “Everybody contributed in their own way. The new guys — Jens [Bracht] and Chris [Killmer] — it was nice to see them get on top of the leader board.”

Killmer’s play was supplemented by freshman Bracht’s three-under, team captain Nick Taylor’s one-under and Richard Lee’s one-over. As each of these individuals boasted top-11 individual scores, the Huskies played a great day of golf in the unusually warm and bright weather.

“The course was playing completely different than the practice round,” said Killmer. “It helped that the greens stayed soft and it really helped to be able to play some of the longer irons.”

Perhaps the weather aided Bracht in sinking his second career hole-in-one. Isaiah Telles of Oregon landed the first “lucky shot” of the day on the 184-yard 16th hole, and Bracht shot the second on the 249-yard 12th hole.

“I could barely see it go in,” said Bracht. “I just struck a two-iron and got lucky. My dad just threw his arms up.”

Cruising into the second day of competition, the Huskies proceeded to win the event for the first time since 2003, outplaying second place Cal by 13 strokes. Ultimately, the team’s success came down to each individual’s focus on the basics.

Killmer proved to be a master of the basics at the tournament.

“I just played really simple and putted really well,” he said.

As simple as it sounds, it got Killmer — and the Huskies — to the top of the board at the conclusion of the Husky Invitational.
