FASA basketball to benefit flood victims

The Filipino American Students Association (FASA) is asking all self-proclaimed “ballers,” as well as other students, to put their money where their shots are and compete in the group’s second annual basketball fundraising event, All Day Ball Day, this Sunday.

Proceeds for the event will go to the Red Cross and be donated directly to Washington state flood victims.

Derek Hertel, fundraising officer for the club, encouraged all students and staff to attend even if they don’t normally play basketball.

“We planned it so it wouldn’t be competitive-based,” he said. “We just want the participants to have fun playing basketball knowing that they are doing it for a good cause.”

In a recent FASA meeting, the group was educated about the history of basketball, which is the national sport in the Philippines.

The club has a total of 91 members and is growing in size.

Ann-Marie Doble, activities director for the club, said FASA focuses on “quality rather than quantity.”

The groups’ goal on campus is to foster unity and pride among its members and the surrounding community through educational, political, cultural and social advancement, according to its Web site.

Doble said FASA has been very successful at achieving these goals.

“FASA is helping to make present the Filipino population on campus while also educating people about our culture and making a difference in our community,” she said.

Doble joined FASA her freshman year. She admits that most of her friends are from FASA and without it she would probably have “no social life.” She is organizing the club’s winter formal, which will take place Feb. 9.
