On Monday, Gov. Chris Gregoire announced a proposal that would require large companies and government agencies to measure their greenhouse gas emissions and report the information to the public.
Well, it’s about time. Gregoire should certainly be applauded for her valiant effort to begin the state’s progress toward addressing climate change. After all, if we don’t know where we are, we can’t know where we should be going.
If they don’t already, this proposal will encourage large companies to address their contribution to climate change. Consumers would also be able to make informed decisions about giving their business to particular companies. Some might argue the economy would suffer when consumers decided to curb their spending at greenhouse-gas-emitting companies. However, this is only further incentive for companies to initiate change if they want to remain competitive.
According to a recent Seattle Times article, Washington is part of a coalition of western states negotiating common rules for limiting greenhouse gases.
Also, if Gregoire’s proposal were to pass, Washington would be seen as a leader of climate change legislation in the Northwest.
Gregoire is also proposing a “green collar job” program that would provide education and training for industries working to address climate change.
