Stardust shines bright

With a star-studded cast, a brilliant script and twinkles of humor, Stardust, out August 10, may just be the best movie of the summer.

In order to earn the love of Victoria (Sienna Miller), young shop boy Tristran (Charlie Cox) declares that he will cross the magical wall of their 19th-century English town and bring back a shooting star. Once past the wall, Tristran enters an unexpected world of magic and discovers that the fallen star he seeks is in fact a woman named Yvaine (Claire Danes). As Tristran drags Yvaine toward his home to show Victoria, they meet a host of fleeing witches who are trying to kill Yvaine for eternal youth as well as feuding princes who want her necklace in order to become kings.

Like a cross between The Princess Bride and Pirates of the Caribbean, Stardust feels slightly familiar: A damsel in distress meets a young village boy who transforms into a dashing, talented man in a world with princes, witches, pirates and magic. But the film does not fall into a trap of redundancy or cliché. Stardust is a completely original fairy tale with flair — it has unique, clever humor, interesting, quirky characters and a breathtaking story.

Stardust is Hollywood at its best. Well-known actors pair with amazing writing, beautiful, sweeping landscapes and clever cinematography to create the grandeur of a high-budget blockbuster without forgetting the characterization and intimacy found in smaller films.

Weaving multiple storylines together, inlcuding royal feuds, witch traditions, pirate escapades and scandalous affairs, Stardust creates a world and a quest as epic and sweeping as The Lord of the Rings.

In addition to a melting pot of well-known stars like Claire Danes and fairly unknown actors such as lead Charlie Cox, Robert De Niro stands out with his undeniably eccentric, hilarious character. Unlike some of his previous roles, De Niro adds an idiosyncratic flair to his character; his originality is reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s.

Stardust gives audiences everything they could want. With an epic story, a spectacular adventure, quirky humor, a cosmic romance, great fight scenes and lovable characters, fans of every genre won’t be able to resist.
